Calling All Rooster Whisperers

My two main roosters are wonderful. Lemondrop is the alpha. He keeps the peace and disciplines the teens if they crow or mate where he can see them. He is the guardian of the flock. A warrior who lost an eye protecting the flock from a hawk. Peter Pan is his second in command. He looks after the chicks and ducklings. He is the nest inspector. “Hey look! This pile of straw will make a good nest! Come look!” Neither will take a treat until they’ve tidbitted to all their favorite girls. Neither would even think about mounting a hen without their consent. Good roosters. I don’t know what I’ll do when they retire. I’m hoping that Lemondrop’s son (Lemoncello) will step up. He does show promise. Then again, he is still young and one of the others may challenge him, like his hatchmate, Castiel. 38474A12-2B28-4C9E-9FC6-F11228D687D2.jpeg E1FE9814-3E22-4C52-AD09-87C1B06BC50E.jpeg The top picture is Lemoncello, the s cond, Lemondrop

I have way more roosters than needed a couple of them had gotten to a point where they were too aggressive with everyone hens other roosters etc about at that age . After researching we did choose to put them in their own pens ( in garage with other chickens to keep them warm during winter) for awhile until they calmed down. They each individually actually calmed down to different extents . Each rooster has their own personality and act differently some have higher stress levels some are more patient and friendly. You will find what works for you. We chose to keep all of ito roosters and make arrangements so each one is comfortable , Such as some live with some hens and other boys in their own space. We let them out together but one roo doesn't get along with a couple others so he doesn't go out when those roos are out. Also when they are young they are more or less"practicing" the mating process as neither the roos or hens have any experience and are all just learning usually sounds more awful then it really is. I'd also recommend checking out roostersareawesome has a rooster flock thread which had some very good input and advice on having more than 1 rooster

Rural, are all of your roosters the same age?
Yes they are. Oldest birds out there are 4 pullets age 7 months.
Keep him in Time out for a while ...you have a 50 / 50 chance he will grow out of it
That's the plan at least for now. I'm not really upset about the sparring injury last week. The pecking pushed me over the edge.
Young cockerels do have a learning curve and may learn to mount properly eventually, but there's no guarantee. My top roo was a bit rough at first, which I chalk up to inexperience. Now -- he is a real ladies man and handles it all with ease.

Last year I had 3 cockerels to 9 pullets. The 2 lower ranking stayed in separate areas of the property for the most part, but would try to mate the pullets if the opportunity arose. For a short time I had to segregate one of them in a cage for his own safety when I locked everyone up at night.

I am currently overrun with cockerels.
I suppose since the bad behaviour came on so suddenly

i got my pet rooster a plush chicken toy off ebay to hump. might be a good option for your guy if he is too rough for living hens. not sure if they can tell the difference lol
OMG this is hysterical:lau:lau

Not your idea, that's brilliant if it works! But you don't even want to know how fast my brain cycled mental images:bun

I'm totally going looking for one. Hey could you patent this idea? Shark tank! Would make awesome TV!

Also I'm now plotting a 4x8 coop section in the hoop. Then I can maintain a sub flock or breeder trio as needed. Plus many gates.

I am SOOOO glad I planned that in from the beginning,
tho wish I had made it wider than 4'...
...even a 1' poop board makes it tight for me to navigate
(but I'm kinda fat and clumsy with knees that don't squat or kneel anymore).
I use it as a brooder/growout area, and right now there's a broody in there.
The first thing I used it for was a rogue cockerel over the first winter.

i actually settled on this plush toy while searching for a chicken sex doll haha.

had to strap some ankle weights around the legs to keep it from moving out from under him but it's definitely his favourite out of all his stuffed toys lol. i think there's definitely a market for chicken sex dolls as the popularity of pet roosters rises
