Also, was wondering if anyone would like a chat forum JUST for Sebastopols. We dont have a breed club, and it would be great to see who is out there and what everyone has. We are a small group of people, so networking is mandatory in order to improve our breeding programs. I love BYC and this forum inspired me to build one for the UPA last year. and would be happy to make one for Sebastopol owners too if you guys think you would use it.

Banter, I'm confused, how can somebody sell you a "show quality" Sebastopol if it doesn't meet the breed standard for color or type?
And you're right colored Sebastopols are a work in progress.

I have alot of photos on my website of my Sebastopols
if anybody wants to take a look-see but I only sell goslings, started youngsters and adults.

Hi Cottage Rose! I have visited your website many times and your geese are exquisite! So is your web page! To answer your question, I purchased my blue gander as show quality from Dave and Millie Holderread. It was many months in the making and we emailed back and forth many times. I sent him pics of my gray goose to get his opinion on a good mate for her, to improve the line. He felt although the feathering on the gander was disappointing, the color and type was great. Also, the gander is only 6 months old and may improve in feather in the Spring. I would love any input as I am still a novice (well read, but still a novice) and could use any info anyone wants to offer. Right now, I don't want to get too hung up on the feathers verses health, structure and temperament. I had Bull Terriers many years ago, and the breed had the same issues with colors and whites, colors needing work to bring up to standard.

Banter there is hope. I bought my blue gander from holdereads last year. (looked about the same quality as yours) Photo below... a year older with much better feathering than last year.

This spring I bred him to my best white female ( a girl I bought from Vicky!!) and together they produced my pretty blue female ...photo below. Her chest is good and she HAD great length to her feathering (altho she has lost a good bit of it already) Also I love her head, she is a beautiful girl. I plan on breding her back to her father next season. Should give me some nice blue babies!

I have a lavender male from this breeding too. his feathering is great!! I will most likely breed him to a splash female I have.

Well we're all learning. I've only had Sebs since 2005.
I just don't like the stories I hear about breeders selling SQ babies or SQ when they aren't.
SQ means they have been shown and won IMO,
and at the very least have show potential.
And yes their feathers do improve with age but I wouldn't expect much after age 2.
Proper management really makes a big difference to help kick start any genetic potential they might have.

Kat the blue daughter is a verynice improvement!

I 'd like to go on your 2009 waiting list if you have one.
Are you going to repeat that breeding?
I've been trying to get 1 or 2 colored Sebs from Jenifer Krause for the last 2 yrs. but shes holding on to everything.

I bought six "Show Quality Seb goslings" last spring from Holderreads, too. They were not show quality at all, I was very disappointed. I had to sell all of them and start over! I wrote them, sent pictures and got some mumbo jumbo back that didnt make sense. It boiled down to they wouldnt stand behind them. Their feathers were stiff and they were just poor quality. Certainly nothing I wanted in my flock. I wonder what their normal quality looked like? These werent even pet quality. I called a friend of mine that is a poultry judge in Ohio. He said that he has been hearing similar stories about Holderread's, i.e., That their quality has just been steadily declining. I have purchased from them before and was thrilled. Not this time. Live and learn. The most disappointing thing was they didnt stand behind them one bit. I just thought I would pass the info on.
