Calling all teenagers

Which of your chickens breeds do you raise for meat?
We’ve eaten RIR roosters but we raise New Hampshire reds specifically for meat. I’m actually in charge of our breeding program 😁. I do everything until culling day, which I don’t participate in.

Nice! what does your breeding plan look like? Lol I get that I don't think I could ever do the killing but I don't mind butchering. I have a sister who doesnt like any of it

We are actually hoping to raise a couple meat birds next year but that is right now 50/50... more like 25/75 lol😂

I help gut them, but anything before that I don’t do. Our newhampshires breed really well, they took a break because our rooster passed, but we have an incubator that holds 44 eggs, and we use that. We have three coops they transfer into as they get older.

I wouldn't mind plucking but I just don't think I could take their life... I'll pawn that to future husband lol 🤣 Nice setup! I'm hoping that I will cull the roosters and sell the pullets when I am able to do all this!

So funny story… when we first began we told ourselves we were not cutting off the heads, we were snapping the neck ‘humanely’ and we were not using a plucker it was too violent. We now love our plucker and yes, cut off the heads. It’s a bit gory but it’s way faster and works better.

lol That's how I want to do it I don't like the hole slit neck snap neck thing... and I heard tons of good stories with a plucker so that was on my list 😂

Aren't they dead once they go in the plucker?
