calling all the moms!

I started adding a little cereal to the bottle about 3 months when they were wanting to sleep thru the night but were waking up hungry at 4 a.m.! Did the trick and we all got to sleep a little longer.

Actually, I did, too. Probably from the same book; I don't remember any more, but it sounds very familiar. I remember buying huge quantities of real plain yogurt, and lactose from the pharmacist. He finally asked me why I was buying all that lactose, saying he needed to know. (He had guessed I was making formula.) That's how I learned it is also used to cut heroin.

Yep, I think is was the same book, LOL. And I used whole and sometimes, even raw, milk, too.

Both my kids were straight milk until 5 months old. I was under the impression it is better to wait to introduce food to babies. In Fact I read that they are thinking of changing the recommended age for introducing cereal to 6 months? I dunno though, my Mom tells me that she fed my brother cereal at 6 weeks (he is 40) and he seems fine lol

OK, you have refreshed this old memory; that was indeed the book. I only waited about 4 months to offer the first foods, then at about 7 or 8 months, I switched to whole milk and select foods only. I never used whole milk in the formula, though; back then, I would have been afraid to. I might have been tempted to if I had had access to raw milk! It was such a relief when the MD said I could start whole milk that young, and quit making that mess for him.

I did buy a little commercial baby food, but mostly made my own, mostly with fresh foods and a blender; froze it in ice cube trays. Was working nights and living in a rental unit. You have brought back some memories!

my mom insists she fed me and my bro and sis cereal at 3wks old cuz we werent sleeping thru the night. i always felt she just got confused with the ages and ment 3 mos. i DO notice a difference when you add solids to your babies diets. mine slept better afterwards. however i didnt feed cereal for long execpt to my little one now, and thats cuz WIC gives it to us. the older two didnt like it much. each of my kids was different and bf. ds went on whole milk at 10 mos. god he was a pig, refused solid foods and would only nurse.... EVERY HOUR! untill 10 mos old. refused bottles everything ugH!!!! my little dd only nurses to fall asleep now and shes only 8 mos.

oh and i mix her cereal with skim milk. all those age things are GUIDELINES. and thats all. as for food allergies... i dont know, no one in my family has any, so i dont worry about it. i also think that moving the ages up for starting solids is an attempt to get ppl to bf longer.

I definitely hear what you are saying; they are all different. In the end, it's a bit like chicks: listen to what the youngster is telling you! I didn't even know they were moving ages up for starting solids. When I see some of the stuff in baby food jars for "older" babies, I wonder, what the heck is wrong with table food.... Moms have been picking meat off fish and cutting stuff up fine for ages....

Breast feeding is currently highly advocated, and for good reason, but I do hate to see a guilt trip laid on those who don't or can't. That's part of why there were wet nurses, before blenders and nutritional studies and Similac.

In the old days- the seventies-my pediatrician said cereal at 6 weeks. By 1987 the same ped. said breast milk only til 6 mos. In '91 I tried to wait. My 5mo. pulled my mouth open and reached in to get a taco chip. The kids were and are fine. Use your own judgement.

My first son was a very hungry baby. I started feeding him rice cereal at a few weeks old (4-6 weeks....it's been 22 years so I can't remember the exact age) but I did not put it in the bottle. I fed him with a spoon. He was hungry and he ate it. I figured that if he was ready to eat it off a spoon he was ready to eat it. I started with just plain rice cereal mixed with formula and then I added a little applesauce to it for flavor. I used to feed it to him as the dinner meal and then he would have a bottle before bed. It worked so well for him that I did my other 2 babies that way also.

I didn't use baby food either except for the baby cereal. I mashed up fresh peas, 'taters, fruits, and blended chicken and I picked the meat off the fish bones

I laughed when I read your post on that one...

Says a lot....

I took my son off the bottle when he threw one out the car window. He couldn't hold a cup upright, but he could drink from it just fine. No sippy cups back then.
