Calling All Vegans!

Yeah I acted like I know nothing about how animals should be treated. They told me it was against their rules. I am sure they just do not want people to see how they treat their animals. Even though I already know.
Wow, that is interesting...I've not heard of such a policy before. I guess they are scared.

I'm not vegan, but my mom is raw vegan! For the past few months she has been doing it and LOVING it. I am not planning to go vegan, but I AM switching to only eating animal products/meat that I get from local family farms where I know the animals are treated AMAZINGLY well.

I don't get my chicks until spring, but I do plan to eat their eggs. And they WILL be extremely spoiled chickens

Good for you mom and you! A lot of people do not truly understand how much of a difference you can make by just knowing were you food comes from.

I agree, it is extremely sad how removed people are from their food these days. Just eat it and don't think twice about where it came from or how many animals had to suffer to become what you're eating.

Why do you assume that they have something to hide?

Biosecurity doesn't mean white suits taped shut at the sleeves and all that. The farmer knows where he has been, but he has no clue where you have been. For all you know, he was wearing his barn clothes that he only wears on the farm, so he knows he is not contaminating anything.

Do you know that you have no avian diseases on your shoes? You can pick up a lot of stuff just from walking through the park.

Sorry I did not mean to offend anyone. I think you misunderstood me. I meant that I think that those people probably do not want to know that their are a lot of people out their that do not agree with them.. I mean they probably have not other option for a better job. I do not think they have anything to hide just if I want something from someone I think I should be nice to them. I am sure you are right about it being for the birds safety. It was that I just did not understand because they did not tell me and because I know a lot of people that have gotten birds from factory farms situations and had not trouble getting them.

Please I was just trying to talk about my experience.

I hope I didn't offend you, that was not the purpose of my post and I tried hard not to be offensive.

I just wanted to point out that it is a reasonable policy to not let the general public into a area used to raise animals. There are chicken breeders here on BYC that won't let you just walk off the street and into their chicken coops.

You did not. And I understand that. I just was sad because I know other people that got their chickens for those places and they did not let me.

Hi everyone! I'm almost vegan, haha. I was vegan for about 2 years, but now I eat eggs again. I do it for health reasons and I think dairy is just terrible for you and eggs aren't all that bad. Especially when you grow em yourself in your back yard.

I was vegan, but now that my chickens lay eggs, I eat theirs. I let them brood when they want to, and eat them when they want to. I give some to the dogs and pigs, and eat what is left. I might be vegan again just because I am sick of eggs!
I keep more cockerels than you are supposed to because I think having ten girls and only one boy is just sexist. Some times it makes sense if the boy is really active, but boys like that are rare. I have had a few mean ones, but they are just doing their jobs: protecting the girls. I will never kill them, and I do not pen them unless it is bed time.
