Calling All Vegans!

I was vegan, but now that my chickens lay eggs, I eat theirs. I let them brood when they want to, and eat them when they want to. I give some to the dogs and pigs, and eat what is left. I might be vegan again just because I am sick of eggs!
I keep more cockerels than you are supposed to because I think having ten girls and only one boy is just sexist. Some times it makes sense if the boy is really active, but boys like that are rare. I have had a few mean ones, but they are just doing their jobs: protecting the girls. I will never kill them, and I do not pen them unless it is bed time.
Yes I have a rooster and two hens everyone told me it would be a problem. It is not he mostly acts like the girls other than not laying eggs :)

This is really depressing sometimes. People seem to seriously think that they can say they love chickens even though they routinely kill and confine them for their own wants. It is more than just this site, though; I do not know anyone around me who actually cares for their chickens for their personalities.

I love my chickens! :D If you want I can tell you each of my chickens personalities :) I feel this as well. A lot of time with people with large numbers of chickens.

How many chickens do you have?

Right now I only have three. I know people with houndred or so chickens. And I do think I would ever be able to have over 20 and still feel like I was taking good care of them. I am planning on hopefully getting some more soon I just have to find some that need a home. What about you?

I currently have 17 hens, four roosters (my other ones died), four duck drakes, and eight duck hens. A drake and three hens are going to a friend of my mothers who has a pond and wants ducks. Six of the chicken hens are my grandmother's that I am just babysitting until she gets settled at her new house. We are getting a pullet and a cockerel the beginning of next month, and 24 hatching eggs that my mother insists on getting. Not my choice. I am saving room for Spring. There are usually a lot of unwanted chickens that time of year.

Wow, chicken raising vegans/vegetarians! I thought I was the only one!!!

I've been an ovo-lacto vegetarian for about seven years now. For the planet, for the animals, and for my health. Being from Metro Detroit, I call it "The Big Three of vegetarianism." I literally do not know another vegetarian IRL...some days I swear I'm the only one in my county. But I decided about a year and a half ago that I could raise my own chickens, enjoy my healthier eggs and not support the nasty, inhumane egg-machine industry. And of course my chickens will live spoiled, happy lives and enjoy the lifespan that nature gives them.

I've been pretty much lurking on the Michigan thread for a while, but I just got my baby chicks two weeks ago so I've been much more social on this site. Based on my brief experience, I have learned that baby chicks are just stupid cute. They do everything in groups. They are hysterically inconsiderate to each other-e.g., "you were sleeping in my way." Today for the first time I observed a couple chicks stepping in something (poo) and raising a single foot forward. So funny!

So hello out there, enjoy your journey, see ya around this site!

I'm not vegan and I know you are asking for vegan recipes but if any vegetarians are reading this and are looking for a good chicken substitute I have an excellent one for breaded chicken breast or chicken/pork/brain balls like the kind you find in Chinese dishes like sweet and sour.

Both recipes start with the same ingredients. You mince an onion and then saute it in butter or margarine. When it is soft, add 1.5 cups boiling broth (vegetable or chicken if you aren't vegetarian) and then add 1 cup uncooked oats. Add any herbs of your choice, such as poultry seasoning and salt and pepper. Bring to a boil and keep stirring for about 10-15 minutes until it is really thick.

If you want to make a chicken breast cutlet substitute, grease a cookie sheet or other wide pan and spread the batter in a layer about 1/4 inch thick and put in the fridge until solidified. If you want balls, just roll it into balls and chill. For the cutlet, slice it into pieces the size you want and then dip in egg and then in seasoned breadcrumbs and saute on each side until browned and crispy.

With the balls, dip them in a batter of your choosing and then deep fry and drain and use in a recipe of your choosing.

It's not as firm as chicken but it makes a good substitute.

This sounds like a good substitute for chicken meat. I am going to try to go meatless at least one day a week, so I will try this out for that. If I make a new recipe and use this, then DH will just think it is what the recipe calls - for not a meat substitute. Thanks for the directions.
