Calling all West-River South Dakotans

I bought a Brower Top Hatch from Bomgaars up in Spearfish. I set 6 eggs just to see how it all worked. I am about to have two light brahma/easter egger. I have two purebred easter egger eggs, but I dont think they are going to hatch. Last night all three of my kids ages 11, 14 and 16 watched as the first egg broke open. I was pretty tickled.

I love it! My in-laws, wife and all three kids just watched the 2nd chick pop out of the shell. I have a broody buff that I finally got a broody box built for today and will move her into it tonight. I have partridge rock and cuckoo maran eggs coming to start my next batch.

That's wonderful!

I've never incubated chicks before. I have a still air incubator, but learning how to get the right temps. I'm hoping to get a broody hen so I can try it out.

Welcome to the group! I'm not in West River area, but felt we needed something to help us in SD locate others in our "part" of the state. I kept locating West River ppl, but not east River! So I started a thread for each. Hopefully it will allow everyone to network with other hobbyists and breeders and perhaps find new stock to add to their flocks, besides buying online or out of state.

That sounds fun seeing them hatch. I've seen them hatch under the broodies. Pretty amazing process!

I know there is some confusion on what we're allowed to sell without a license and what requires a license, in South Dakota. So I started asking some of the State officials. This is what I was told in regard to my inquiry. Thought I'd share:

Hi,
I would be happy to answer your questions about selling eggs in South Dakota. If you are selling eggs your own egg production and the customer is coming to your farm to buy the eggs, you do not need to be licensed. However, if you are selling eggs at a farmers market, food service establishment, or retail outlet, then you are required to have a South Dakota Egg Dealers license and a SD Egg Candler/grader license. If you are interested in being licensed, please let me know and I will send you a licensing packet in the mail.

As far as your questions dealing with poultry and swaps, you would need to visit with the State Veterinarian with the Animal Industry Board. The contact person is Dr. Dustin Oedekoven. His phone # is 605-773-3321 or you can email their office with [email protected]

Hope I was able to answer your questions.
