Calling all West-River South Dakotans

Love, love, love all the information about the swaps and selling poultry/eggs!

OH- Hi everyone! I just joined BYC this last week and I'm a west river girl - just to the northwest of RC a couple miles. It's nice to see some of you that are so close and nice to see those that aren't too!

We are in the process of building a coop and I'm starting to think it's going to be built better than our house! My husband tells me it's for "your chickens" but I'm thinking he wants the best for OUR feathered babies!

I am so green to this whole "chicken thing"...anyone have any words of advice to just throw out there at the top of your head?

One thing I have learned is NOT hurry and do something permanent based on your first read of something. You will find all these ideas on here and think, "THAT"S what I want to do." Then you get down the road a ways and discover that for your situation, another idea is better. For me, having chickens has been a fluid process. I am still constantly learning.

One book that I love is "The Small-Scale Poultry Flock" by Harvey Ussery. I refer to it all the time.

Youtube has great vids about chickens. How to process, build coops, compost manure, etc. I am a visual learner and love this option!

I live by Piedmont, so if you get to the point of wanting to send a chicken to freezer camp and have never killed and processed a chicken, let me know. I would be glad to help.

oh isn't the state horse show by brookings its for 4-h i enter it and im pretty good not trying to brag if i am please do tell!

Oh I didn't assume you were in Brookings or that it was in Brookings. My signature just mentions I am in Brookings county area. :D Helps people locate where I'm at in comparison. I knew I was on the West River thread, so I assumed it was in West River somewhere.

Wanted to let everyone know, who might be interested in this or perhaps might be interested in putting on a workshop for the day or being a speaker:

1st Annual Sustainable Living Fair featuring workshops, speakers, and exhibitors helping advance the skills of homesteading, self-sufficiency, community resiliency and sustainability.

---------------------------------------------------
The event will take place in the old historical town hall of Bushnell, South Dakota. One of the older county communities, Bushnell was the jumping off point of pioneers settling South Dakota. It is a great location for the promotion of sustainability and community resiliency, with its ties to agriculture & its collection of resident artists and craftspeople.

We are working to recruit some awesome speakers & perhaps some DYI demonstrators and others who'd benefit homesteaders and the gardeners and livestock raisers amongst us.

Hope to see some or all of you at the event!

Glad you both joined. I think you will like the group. I started it because we were having trouble locating South Dakotans in our own neck of the prairie

I was constantly finding the West River members of BYC, but not the East River members.

So I figured I'd use a term (West/East River) to help us find our own geographic group. We've been slowly getting ourselves located. I hope you enjoy the group as much as I enjoy reading everyone's comments! Hope you all stay safe as these storms roll through the Black Hills too!

Yes, we finally had rain here in the southern Black Hills!
Finally? Really??!!! We've been getting rain almost daily for about two weeks now on the far eastern side! I'd like a few more days of DRY weather so I can get some coops finished!

But I guess we can't complain too much. There for a while we thought we might end up having a drought the way the lack of winter moister but these last few weeks have changed all that!

Madison & Flandreau got over 6 inches in the latest storm. Don't know how much we got here in Bushnell. Just know it wasn't as much as they got and luckily we didn't get hail but I know areas south of us did.
