I've got 9 eggs left in the incubator, due on May 6. Yesterday, I gave 5 new eggs to my newly broody Sebright, Moonshine. Hers will hatch 8 days later. Some eggs are Spitzhauben, and some are Spitzhauben/Sebright cross. I am abbreviating the cross to "Sprights." Since I had removed a couple of quitters from the incubator, I added 2 Sprights yesterday, as back-ups for the broody's eggs. She only has 5 eggs, and I am going to try to add the extras even if all hers develop....

@SueT how close do you keep the temperature in the incubator to 95.5°F?

I tested my neighbors thermometers in one of her incubators with my Fluke meter and found some were very close and some off by 5°F or more... so I marked the goods ones for her with a smiley face.

We got 2" of rain over the last 24 hours. I think today will be dry.....I have to get vehicle inspection for our pickup today. If your registration expired in March or April, there is a 60 day extension but ours expires May 1.

We just had to pull our chickens out of 2 inches of water in their coop. Believe me it’s hard to blow dry a chicken

Well I set it at 37.5C and let its internal thermostat take care of maintaining the temp. I got an 'incutherm' thermometer/hygrometer which is supposed to be one of the more accurate ones. I keep it in the incubator and check it often. Temp in there varies during the day by 5ºC. I am using Celsius because this incubator is set by Celsius only. The room temp varies a lot, but the incubator seems to adjust. When I candled all the eggs, all but 3 were developing, so far so good. I add water with an eyedropper into a little hole we drilled in the side near the bottom. It doesn't take much water to keep humidity at 30-40% which is what some experts on BYC have recommended for the first 18 days.

This is my first experience w incubating, so we shall see how it turns out. Many BYC peeps use and like this Janoel 12 incubator. I assume I'll get chicks without a big hassle, but am aware of the many things that can go wrong. It is enjoyable to have this project and something to look forward to.
