My cucumber turtle has returned! For those of you who don't know its story, several years ago, I was annoyed that a box turtle was munching on the low hanging cukes and tomatoes. I took it to the far side of the yard but it returned. So I took it 1 1/2 miles away and released it. My sister told me that box turtles will always return home or die trying. Then I felt really bad. BTW, every box turtle has its own unique shell pattern and coloring. I took a pic of this one before I let it go. 3 months later, it was back! It had crossed a road, a hay meadow, woods, 2 or 3 streams, steep terrain, a pasture, and found its way back to the garden. I took another pic and compared them.

Yep, same individual. From then on, I said, he was welcome to munch on low hanging fruit. He has returned every year.

Well last week, I had fenced in my garden w small animal fencing due to an armadillo digging holes all over it, and the cat playing w my plants. I forgot about the turtle, until today, I saw him trying to get in by the cucumber trellis. I ran and grabbed some wire cutters and made a little turtle sized opening, and he went right in. Welcome home, cucumber turtle!

First Tip...ducks need duck friends.
Second tip...ducks make big water mess. It doesn't always work out real great for the chicks to be in the same brooder with ducks.
Since you only have one of each you may be able to get by with it if you keep it really clean I use puppy pads underneath my shavings to help absorb water.

Also if you are feeding chick starter, that will not have enough niacin for the duckling.
Especially if that is a Pekin duck which I suspect it probably is.. pekin ducks seem to need more niacin than others for some reason probably because of how fast and big they grow.
I use nutrena naturewise meat bird crumbles and have had good luck without supplementing.

Well I just gave my Amish friend 5 of the youngsters. A pair of Spitzhaubens, which I had been promising, and the 3 xtra cockerels. She was delighted, and I am so relieved. She really liked seeing the mixed Sprights and asked if she could have a hen too. Probably I'll give her one of the 5 I have left. I told her, re the cockerels, that I just couldn't kill them. She said, 'I can't either, I always have one of the men do it.'
So all is well, crowding and chaos is avoided in the chicken run.
