Yes, they e-mailed me that morning to say the # of speckled sussexes I want will hatch on March 7th, so I'll get them on March 8 or 9th. Still, only a 2 week wait!
I'm excited that they had both breeds I was wanting to try in pullets, no less. Still I got 1 male for each breed to see how the roosters behave. I may have to advertise my 'extras' for sale once I decide who my favorites are. Thanks!
Missy, my husband's beef with the bantams is that they only lay little eggs, and the d'uccles stop laying during the winter, and the roosters aren't hardly worth butchering if I can't find a home for them. I love them because they eat less, and when they do lay eggs, they do a good job, plus they are so cute and cuddly and easy to pick up. I do worry about my Jersey Giant rooster if he ever gets mad at me I'm going to plan for a chicken dinner. He's too big to mess with if he ever decides to change personality. The other night when I moved them in the big coop with my bantams, I didn't grab him right since it was dark. I got clobbered in the face with his flapping wing-- no shiner thank goodness. But that's what happens when you try to grab a black chicken in the dark- it's hard to see where to pick him up. He's a nice boy right now, and likes treats and is not letting the little bantam hens pick on him. First one that tried, got stepped on with one foot, which was both humorous and concerning. She wasn't hurt, but if that had been her neck, it might have been a different story. He's so beautiful with glossy black, green and purple iridescent sheen to his feathers, just stunning!
I hope you get some fertile eggs from that porcelain pair. Of my d'uccles, only one of my youngest pullets is laying. My Langshans just started laying this week (for the first time- thank goodness) And I have my old barred rock egg-eater hen out of the coop & run so she can't cause problems. I am going to be looking out for any mille chicks I can find at the feed stores next week. If you do end up getting some eggies from your mille pair, I'd love to swap you some fertile porcelain eggs this summer for the milles. My husband loves the mille pattern.
