I was just thinking about ordering some more.....if you need some more to help meet your minimum order, I could go with some more mille fleur d'uccles or standard salmon favorelle pullets.........(vaccinated of course). I like the Langshan hens, and I'm thinking of giving Favorelles a try. Their roos are so pretty! I'm selling my blue Jersey Giant roo now that the boys are scrapping with each other, if you know anyone interested. Those Jersey Giants poop more than I could've imagined! That will leave me with one black Jersey Giant roo for my big girls. They have the most beautiful crow, like a cross between an owl and a dove. Much prettier sound than my d'uccles. But they are more timid and so have to be bribed with treats to come to me during the day, unlike most of my d'uccles who I can just pick up at will. I've narrowed it down to 3 d'uccle roosters that I'm keeping for this year, with the best temperments, and the rest I will find new homes for sometime this year. Sorry the guy you got from me turned out to be a trouble maker
I have the other younger porcelain still, but he's not as pretty, just more tame. I'd had my youngest d'uccles inside for the last 3 weeks d/t the awful temperatures and blizzard. I finally got them back outside today. The little guy was so happy to be outside he just ran up to my Jersey Giants and did his little dance like he was still in charge, and they just looked at him like he wasn't even there. I feel kind of bad, though because he's kind of attached to me and when I'm in the main chicken run he hangs by the fence waiting for me to come out, and get's pecked by the senior d'uccle, who's a brute to the other boys, if he gets too close to the fence. (welded wire) If anyone else needs a cute little TAME bantam rooster (porcelain d'uccle) let me know- free to good home. I'm not keeping him for breeding since he only has 3 maybe 4 points on his comb.
Now we are transitioning from snow to muck, and the spots that aren't covered in snow are covered with water or mud. YUCK!
I completely redid the location of the roosts and the nest boxes in my biggest coops and those dorky birds all tried to crowd on the highest roost (except my low guy in the pecking order who is also my sweetest guy. ) I have a barred rock hen who I discovered is eating her own eggs so I need to separate her out before the others start laying and learn that nasty habit. She will have her own little 'doghouse' sized coop and free run of the yard. I figure she can be the yard hen. If she wasn't one of the very first chickens I owned I would cull her, but she has sentimental value
We let Fredrick(roo from you) out today in hopes that after being quarintined he would get along but no chance. He went right at my small and in charge roo so we had to isolate him again. He would make a great solo roo for someone, not that I have ever known someone to be short of roos. What a bully. I am still hoping his wife can be put in with him and at least we could try and hatch out some fertile eggs. He can stay until the windows in the house are open and I have to listen to too much crowing. Oh well.
Its so fun to see the chickens get excited about coming out into the yard. They see me walk out the back door toward them and they all crowd at the gate hoping to get out. They have really spread out across the yard the last few days enjoying scratching in the grass and MUD. Snow, snow go away.
Has anyone else's roos suddenly become nippy over the last few days? It's like they turned into hormonal grouches or developed the spring fever thing with mine. I wonder if I need to have my husband start firing up the pot for some chicken soup...... Look at me, such a big talker, but I didn't cull my other little guy the other day as planned. He was back to his sweet old self and I didn't have the heart to do it, especially after the others started being nippy too. I think I'll keep him in his own little hutch for now until I decide what to do with him as he's terrorizing my Jersey giants who are 5x his size when I let him out to roam the yard. He's like Napoleon keeping the troops rounded up and they all fear him despite his size!

Yes! I was noticing that this morning... I haven't had a lot of time to spend with the chickens lately so this morning since I was the only one that had to get up I had a few minutes. So I was watching the roo who was in the run and he wouldn't even let the girls get off the ramps! But I also had the 1 puppy with me so I thought maybe he was nervous about her... BUT there are feathers everywhere in the coop!!! I mean everywhere and the girls have stopped laying!!!!
No school today so we let all the chickens out. They were so happy. Even got some pictures of my bantam phoenixes that I will upload to show. It was so nice to sit outside and watch them pecking in the yard. It really gave me a taste of Spring. I know its not here but its nice to have a little hope.
Put an ad on Craigs list to get rid of 5 hens. I am getting 15 eggs a day and its taking up too much room in my fridge. After feeding 30 birds all winter, its time to prioritize who I really want and for what reasons. Chose 5 hens that are good layers but no personal attachment to them. And this helps justify the purchase of new chicks.
If interested, I am selling 2 Araucanas and 3 RIR. They are about 13 months old. I am asking $40 for the 5.
Something is up with McMurray Hatchery. Tried to order chicks today(my order with a friends) and almost everything is unavailable. I ordered from them the second week of February last year and got almost all the varieties I wanted. Now nothing is available. Weird huh?! Jacob's cave is looking better and better.
hey everyone from missouri, I am looking to get a show quality big black orpington rooster. If anyone has one or knows of any let me know please and thank you
Hatch Update.
Out of the 15 mottled cochin eggs and 2 barnyard mix eggs I set on the 8th eight of the mottleds are viable and 1 of the barnyard mixes is developing.
Eight of them were either too old or just not fertile and one started to develop and died leaving me with eight that are doing good.
I also put 3 more mottled eggs in on the 13th and they are veining!
I hope all of these continue to do well and will keep updating as the hatch comes along.
I expecting 8 mille fleur eggs to come in the morning and will set them Sunday night. I ordered these from Rare Feathers Farm.
I also ordered a dozen mixed bantam cochin eggs from luckypickens that will be shipping on Monday!
She said I could expect both blue and black mottled, black, calico, mille fleur, lavender and buff columbians out of this mix.
Here's a picture of our golden phoenix- he's about 2 months old now. I think he is going to be quite amazing when he is full grown.
Well I had to give up on ordering birds. I really didn't need any, just was helping a friend get to 25. But it seems that McMurray is a definite no go and many other sites will not have chicks til March.
