We do have a friendly group here!

I haven't been on here in a while. There has been so much going here! I have been tilling and retilling the garden getting bits of it done in between work, other comittments and the RAIN! I have gotten almost everything planted and can see light at the end of the tunnel!

My last hatch was not very good at all. I got 7 bb reds and one barred bantam cochin out of about 32 eggs. I wasn't able to be here that last 10 days of incubation and my friend didn't keep as good of eye on humidity as I do. Oh well.
I am finished hatching for awhile, too much to keep up with.

I have my broody little mottled bantam cochin who has one baby under her as of 4:00 today and 3 more eggs!

This is the first one of my girls that has successfully hatched eggs! I am so excited! She is a good mom.

One of my silkies finally went broody! I have no rooster, so no eggs to give her.

Does anyone have fertile eggs anywhere near the KC area? I'm not picky on what type of eggs, just think it would be neat for my kids to have a chicken hatch some eggs out.

I have lots of fertile egge. I live in odessa, but work in lees summit. I also have a little silkie that has gone broody. She is sitting on 1 of her eggs and 2 others! You could sure have some if we could get together.

well the cicadas popped out last night. Kaylee spent an hour today gathering them up to feed to the chickens

That would be great! Anytime that would be good tomorrow for you should be good if that's ok. She's been on the nestbox since yesterday afternoon, so I want to move her tonight to a broody cage and make sure she stays there before I put anything under her. She has a golf ball and an unfertilized egg under her right now. This is my first broody, I'm so excited!

One of my BO's was playing with being broody awhile ago, but changed her mind. Hoping my silkie doesn't.

The first chickens we raised where still inside in around September and there were a TON of grasshoppers, each day we'd go out and collect 15 to give the chicks, so they'd each get one. My son just loved to watch them go crazy chasing them!

I have none here in Kansas City yet. I love the sound at night. If it is the big year, maybe it'll cost less feed!!! FREE PROTEIN! Whoo Hoo!

Hello fellow Show-Me Staters

I just wanted to hop in and let you all know about the River Hills Farmer's Market in Silex and Troy Missouri. The River Hills Farmer's Market is a group of local farmers that gather together to sell locally grown produce, fresh baked goods, small animals, and crafts. We are a Non-Profit organization that supports 4H and FFA youth. Our goal is to promote local farmers and help to ensure the future of the small farm.

We have two locations for our markets:

Silex, MO - 2nd Saturday of each month starting February 2011 thru December 2011. Times are from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Located at the Silex City Park. Special Events are located at the Silex School.

Troy, MO - 1st, 3rd, 4th & 5th Saturday of each month starting May 2011 thru October 2011. Times are from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Located at the Tractor Supply Company.

Phone #: (573)485-7261

email: [email protected]

We are having a big event on June 18th at the Tractor Supply in Troy, Mo. It is our Summer Market Fair. The Market will start at 8am. There will be several things going on at the fair that day:

*A panel discussion on hen selection and poultry breeding
*An egg show. Three eggs on a small disposable plate are an entry and a second small plate is to be provided by the exhibitor as well. One of the eggs will be broken for quality evaluation. There will be a $1 entry fee for each entry of 3 eggs. The best eggs exhibited will receive half of the entry money. Please keep eggs cool and protected from sunlight until called for the show.
*A competition for the title "Best Hen in the river Hills". Birds will be evaluated for both breed and laying type. There will be a $2 entry fee for each bird and half of the entry fees will go to the owner of the winning hen. Open to hens and pullets near to laying.
*There will be an old fashioned country auction that day if interested and consignments warrant. A 5% commission will be charged on all items sold.
*Food will be available on the grounds

There will be much to do and see on this day and a number of rare and heritage poultry and small hoof stock breeds will be on display and for sale. Beginners and backyard poultry raisers will have the opportunity to speak directly with veteran breeders and acquire birds of several ages in small numbers.

The day will go forward rain or shine. There is no admission fee for visitors. A large raffle will be held, market memberships will be available, and vendor set up is free to market members.

I am of course a member of this small but growing farmer's market. I will be the one with the red Durango sporting the BYC bumper stickers

I hope to see some of you there!

Ava, MO has a Farmer's Market every Sat. morning with poultry. Mansfield, MO has a swap meet with lots and lots of chicks and other poultry/rabbits/etc every Sunday morning. Mansfield swap meet is about 1/4 mile north of Mansfield on hwy 5.

Thanks for the Farmer's Market info, Ozark hen and Mopargal.
This is the type of info I need as a newbie to Missouri.
Now I just gotta figure out how far each of these is from
our place near Chillicothe, LOL.

OT- What kind of Mopar do you have, Mopargal?
I'm restoring a 1966 Plymouth Barracuda.
