Might have to look for the key to the canoe!

No I haven't tried any non-shipped eggs, my hens just started laying last week, my remaining roos are still pretty young, and there aren't any breeders around here that we know of. We really just wanted to try with eggs of the breeds we wanted because we fall in love easily and have a limited supply of space. I was kind of hoping that asking here might lead me in the right direction.

I do have some experience hatching, but it was corn snakes, not chickens LOL I had a fabulous hatch rate though

Sorry you aren't having much luck either. It is frustrating but I just want to do it so badly! I guess I am a glutton for punishment. I had 21 in the incubator this time but we are down to four with one week left and 3 of those I think are quitters but I didn't want to take them out "just in case". I will check again tomorrow night and I am hoping that I have at least one still going. I had one that I was sure was going to hatch during my last batch but it ended up being malpositioned too. We were so sad. I would really like to try some eggs that weren't shipped. The insides of some of the eggs looked like someone had taken a whisk to them.

Good luck with your upcoming eggs! Oh, and if there was a Chicken Math class in school, I would have an A+

Hi Everyone! I live in Salisbury, Missouri. I am new to chickens but have always wanted some and I am amazed and how much I enjoy them. I have got my daughter hooked on them too. It was inevitable, they are such charming creatures. I have already been a victim of chicken math and looking for more! I started out with 4 went up to 16, found homes for two roos so now of course we need to replace those, right?

We have been trying to hatch eggs we have bought off eBay because my daughter would really like some BLR and GL Wyandottes. Unfortunately we are having miserable luck though. We are on our 3rd round of incubation and still not one has hatched. Out of 4 dozen eggs only a few started to develop and then quit. The insides of most of them were just scrambled.

If you all know anyone that has BLR or GL Wyandotte chicks or hatching eggs that we could pick up and avoid USPS please let me know. I don't mind driving a few hours.
welcome to the MO thread
I look forward to seeing pictures of your wyandottes when you get them going

I have had "scrambled eggs" with my own non-shipped incubated eggs. At least nothing developed in those eggs. It's sadder when the egg begins developing then stops. I keep opening the quitters but not sure I'm learning anything.

Check Craigslist. I know Keytsville (I probably didn't spell the right) has sales quite often (monthly, every other month). Are you on one of the facebook buy/sell pages? There seems to be a lot more activity going on there.
Here's some of the facebook pages.

Good luck finding the breeds you want (chicks or eggs).

LOL! I feel you, these chicken eggs are way more sensitive than my pythons or geckos! I get nearly 100% on those, not so much the chickens.....but I'm working on it heavily! Had to put the bator in a different room, and keep sanitizer and chlorhexadine nearby for when I need to do anything. What types of chicks are you looking at? I'm trying a lot of different breeds in a mixed flock before we decide what we may want to breed, since we will be doing separate pens for all but a mixed laying flock (maybe with a Am roo over them, to have EEs). Of what I have, I really like my Cream Legbar, my Salmon Favs (LF), and my GL Brahmas best so far. They all have their own special and unique personalities though, so I always want to have a mixed flock of some sort.

Thank you, this is the best batch so far, and they were shipped. So will just wait and see. Looking at getting eggs of BLRW, FBCM, Lav/Split Ams, and BBS Orps, maybe a couple Legbars too, but not sure. Driving to a different state to get them, lol. If they hatch well I may have a chick or 2 for you, no promises though, lol. I think we would all have great grades in Chicken math, MO has an honor program!

We spent the whole day at the state fair in Sedalia, mo... Not a drop of rain, and really quite comfortable to walk around all day.

Today was poultry judging day... So, being a first time hobby backyard chickener type person... It cool to see what "show" chickens look like... One of the things that stands out to me... My girls, while they are excellent layers, are tiny compared to the breed examples I saw today... Like... Not as tiny as a bantam variety, but about half the size of the birds I saw today... My girls are only a year old though... But are they really going to double in size in the next couple of years?

Are your hens from a hatchery? The difference in quality breeds and hatchery is amazing! I never knew until I saw for myself...
Really want to go there but...
