Today Moonshine took her 3 babies outside for the first time. I had an idea, and brought #4 orphan out for a see-no-touch meeting. The other chicks were friendly, but mama tried to peck this imposter thru the basket...

They look so much alike! But mama knows her babies and this ain't one of them. So near and yet so far. But....if I keep doing this, at least the youngsters can be friends and integrate more easily. In a couple of weeks I may make another pen in the coop next to theirs.

Good morning everyone! We got 2" of rain overnight! It looks like a drizzly day is ahead, but I am going to Lamar poultry swap this afternoon and try to find someone to take the single orphan chick. Or get another chick to live with it, because it cries out loudly a lot.
I know better than to ask if anyone on this thread wants it.
I put an ad on Craigslist and it was flagged. Why I don't know, maybe you are not allowed to sell animals under 6 weeks, something like that? That's what I am guessing.

There ain't no telling with craigslist... good luck finding a friend for it.

Have you tried putting the other chicks in with the orphan for a while? Maybe if they spend enough time together the Mom will take her in???

On the weather front, got a few drops of rain on the way to Rocky Falls Shut Ins yesterday but that was it.

I put in another kind of basket, with openings big enuf for chicks to slip thru. Some went in there w the orphan, but mom wasn't fooled which were hers and which was the imposter which she tried to peck. This new baby was only 1 day old, not really good to stay outdoors too long. It was a warm day, but not above 80....Meanwhile, the 3 chicks w broody, on day 3, spent most of the afternoon running around outside and rarely going under mom.
This hen is very opinionated. She has made up her mind.

I went to the poultry swap w the orphan chick, but a little rain prior to it had apparently scared everyone away. So we drove to Webb City to the new Atwoods and got another chick to keep it company. It's a bantam, slightly older. I don't know what kind, it's ginger color with a black spot on its head. The orphan seems glad to have someone to talk to in its own language. It showed the newbie around the brooder, demonstrating the mirror, the food bowl, and the water nipple. So far so good.
Next poultry swap, in 3 weeks, Joplin, I'll bring them both....
