calling any one from missouri

I posted this on the main thread and then thought perhaps since you guys understand missouri weather you can tell me how you handle this type of day.

We have a new flock, I feed and water my flock outside of the coop. The coop is raised and so the food and water is under there so the girls and boys can eat and drink in shade and out of the rain. Last heavy rain my daughter and I had to place the chickens in the coop, they hung out under it and would have gotten very wet after a while. This morning a light rain started. I am not sure I should open the door to let them out to feed, or if I should keep it closed and put food and water inside the coop. I don't want them getting wet and sick because they are too silly to take one or two steps in the rain to enter the coop.
how do other people handle this.

How old are they?

they are about14 or 15 weeks and have been out in there coop for quite a while, they go in and out as they please and at night we call it the chicken parade as they travel in for the night. This will be thesecond rain that they will need to decide if they go in or not.

LilChickies - my birds free range. They really do have enough sense to come out of the rain if they want to.
They'll be fine. Even when there's snow on the ground they can romp.

So, I'm in Franklin county and we just ordered some chicks from MyPetChicken to add some "pets" to our flock. Half the order (7 out of 15)died within 24 hours of arrival. I had bought 3 Silver Laced Polish for my 6 year old and they all died. Does anyone in MO have any Polish chicks, preferably NOT white crested (she does't like them), they would be wanting to sell?

Can't remember if I have introduced myself to this thread but I am just outside of Kansas City in Lees Summit.

I have 6 ducks and now a couple dozen chickens, Most of my chickens have been growing out in my garage, in the next week I am introducing them to the the two adult hens I have in my coop. I placed two of the pullets in there last night, this morning was afraid to go check, and opened the coop at sunrise. The pullets seemed scared, but the eventually did come out of the coop and stayed in a corner. The hens acted as nothing was different.

I'll gradually add more this weekend. My ten year old went to bed crying last night that I was going to kill her chickens.

Would be easier to take a big dog crate or wire cage to introduce the babies to the others.
Then you wouldn't have to worry about the older birds attacking them while they introduced themselves.

Mine free range too. Some chickens like the rain and others hate it. They will find a place to hide if they don't want to get wet. If it isn't cold out and or they are not new to the outside routine then I typically do not worry about them. They will get them hang of it.

I am always adding new groups of chicks... even when I say it is the last batch somehow more come along. LOL chicken math!!!!!

Yes, I think I might do dog crate with some of the others. All the chickens I will be introducing are about 4 - 5 months old.

My dog crate is currently holding year old cochins that I bought two months ago, during the thirty quarantine, trying not to go out and buy another one. One hen went broody ( I think she has been broody now for over six weeks) and then a few weeks ago the other went broody. So I need to break them of their broodiness to get my crate back! Last week I was going to take away her eggs, and decided to wait another couple of days, well the next day we had one lonely chick hatch. She ignored him, and continued to be broody, so he is in my brooder with a two other chicks we hatched in the incubator a few weeks earlier.

I am driving my husband crazy with all of this. He wants his garage back. I also have eight 5 month old silkies waiting to go out in the coop and three more bantams. I had a big rooster I had to get rid of first. I finally found a loving home for him two nights ago, so now everybody can be moved.

Still so new to chickens, and learning as I go.
