27º, snowing, and 20mph winds.....

Yuck, we are fairing a bit better on the east side @ 42°F and overcast... the week looks nice and clear and sunny. Perfect weather to skip work lol.

UGG no idea what the wind chill has been today. Strong winds, 30 degrees, it felt soo cold. I'm so ready for warm weather.

My two 2-yr old hens have become terrible bullies to the 1 yr olds, necessitating all kinds of extra hassles every day. Meanwhile I have been reluctant to integrate the new batch of chicks because of the situation with these hens. Yesterday was the last straw. One of the leghorns had a bleeding comb, blood splattered everywhere. I put blu Kote on it, and the bullies viciously attacked her again. I got out the wound powder to stop the bleeding.....btw, I also had a broody in the broody breaker cage, and about this time I was ready to quit chicken-ing for good!
Then, I remembered a while ago, I had bought on Ebay some Pinless Peepers, plastic blinders for chickens. You clip them on their nostrils and it creates a blind spot right in front and they can't see to attack and so they don't. I had been reluctant to try them, but it was that or poultry swap or freezer camp. I think they'd choose the blinders.
My DH helped me attach them to both hens. Wow, they really work! Suddenly, everyone is hanging out together, peacefully. The two hens don't seem uncomfortable physically, they are still eating, etc. But they aren't going after the others. When it warms up, I plan to integrate the Spitzhaubens, now 2+months.

Little plastic nubs go in the nostrils. You soak it in a cup of boiling water until it's pliable and bends easily with your fingers. Some sellers offer a tool, but you don't need it to put them on.

To remove, I guess you'd find a reverse pliers useful. DH has some that will work.

I used to raise pheasants when I had a good dog, and we had to use blinders on them. The ones I used had a separate pin that you ran through the blinder, into one nostril and out the other. It had a barb that held it on. When we got ready to set the birds, you just cut the barb off and pulled the pin.

Ok I'm calling it an official end to winter in Missouri, I've replaced the winter heated and insulated waterer with the summer waterer and I won't take no for an answer. Winter is final and done!
