A not-to-miss event in SW MO:
Aug 1-4 will be the annual Marian Days Festival in Carthage, a remarkable one-of-a-kind experience that is worth going to if you live within a reasonable distance. Tens of thousands of Vietnamese Catholics from all over the country converge on the campus of the Mother of the Redeemer (Dai Hoi Thanh mau) and set up camp on the 28 acre grounds (and in surrounding neighborhood) and besides their religious events, they will have markets, tent restaurants with amazing foods, exotic tropical treats, etc. We are neither Catholic nor Vietnamese but always feel welcomed and look forward to visiting this event each summer. It's truly like visiting another country, another world. We look forward to having fresh pressed sugar cane juice...rain is forecast tho. I hope there will be less than predicted! If you go, be prepared to park blocks away and walk......(if you lived during the Vietnam War, you will understand part of the significance of this event and what brought so many here after the US withdrew.)

Here's a Joplin Globe video primer on foods you will find there:

well yes, us too, and we usually avoid crowded events, but this is so unique. And tho you have to walk blocks, it is fascinating all the way....local residents have welcomed camping in their front yards. Some families invite the same families back year after year. The Carthage community has embraced the festival goers whole heartedly and you can feel such good vibes everywhere....

I loved the spring rolls they brought in to share.
and speaking of which, one of the congregations that runs a big food tent is from Port Arthur TX, and they bring fresh gulf shrimp---I always buy some of their scrumptious summer rolls to take home.

I peeked inside the Carolina Wren's nest today when she was not there and there is 4 eggs... tiny little thing for sure. She doesn't seem to mind me going in and out of the chicken run and has never fled the nest because of me so that's a good thing. I wish the camera had better light...

We’ve had the Carolina wrens raise two broods by the house this year.

We had one brood on the front porch in a little house I made for them

then I had a trash can on the back porch by the door, that had some remodeling waste in it, and they snuck a nest in it and laid eggs before I caught it...

So we just worked around it, and she’d sit on the nest as we went in and out of that door and never flushed as long as I didn’t lean over and peek in...

Since you’re handy you’re gonna have to build them some nest boxes ;)
