So it is juniper! not cedar then. No, not making gin here. Have you made it?

It may be what is called Eastern red cedar endemic to Missouri but Eastern red cedar are in the juniper family and not the cedar family.
I have not yet made gin from them but I have lots from both the Eastern Red Cedar and Hetz columnar junipers.

It has really been a wild ride. 10F at the beginning of November and then a warm up. 7 inches of snow last week and almost all of it is gone but still wet out there. 60+ for a couple days and fairly mild but a weekend of rain coming. I'm not telling most of you anything you don't already know.

It is warm enough to take long walks. Here's an interesting tree, a type of Locust...(black locust or honey locust maybe?) with a coat of formidable thorns.
And there are lovely blue berries on the red cedar trees.

Did you know that those blue berries are edible? That was what an outdoorsman that I worked with last year told me.
He did not share that you could make gin from them! But that might have been because we were teaching a bunch of middle school kids and that's not something the school district would like us to teach them!

For a Christmas treat, I gave my chickens some alfalfa sprouts this morning....now they are locked in the run and there is no grass in there right now. If they don't eat it all, maybe it will take root and grow.

Our favorite!

However, in the spirit of Christmas I feel like I should come clean. I lied to you before.
Orange is not "technically" my favorite color.
My favorite color is actually green.
I do prefer orange and yellow for flowers. Never been a red rose kinda gal.
And I do have a lot of orange things. . and I like it. . but it's not my absolute favorite.

So. . I have decided to give your color back to you and I take back the double tap you did not deserve.

We didn’t have one of those for Christmas... we had an apple pie, a cheese cake and a chocolate mousse pie... and all kinds of other goodies...

I got you a giant pink unicorn for Christmas... but you have to share with a 4 year old, lol
