It was 34 this morning. But it did not freeze. Now are we safe to plant more warm weather veggies?????
Moonshine, the broody hen, is on day 19. I am getting their apartment ready. The Sprights in the incubator hatched on day 20. She has 6 of those, and 1 Spitzhauben.
Meanwhile my chicks in the brooder are doing fine... 4.jpg

I always heard wait till after Mothers Day to plant so by that saying we should be good to go for planting. 2020 is the year for strange happenings though, so who knows? I plan to plant my zinnia seeds though. Our youngest daughter brought our chicks out of the brooder to stretch their legs for awhile yesterday. They seemed to enjoy it in spite of the cooler day.

The chick with splay leg, who has been wearing a hobble made of vetwrap for the past 4 days, is improving but not all the way healed. We call her Hoblet. I had her isolated in a box, with a mirror and radio for company. She would just stand in front of the mirror, talking to her reflection for hours at a time, quite content. With the hobble, she can walk upright, tho a bit waddle-ly, find the food and water, then go back to the mirror.

I became concerned about her lack of social interaction and how it would affect her development. So I decided to put her in with the rest of the chicks. It was a non event for them, no one pecked at the hobble or the chick. The vetwrap is black, chosen intentionally to be inconspicuous. Hoblet was upset and stood there loudly peeping. So I brought the radio and the mirror. That calmed her down. She seems to be integrating okay now. At 4 1/2 days old, having spent the first 4 days isolated, this is an important step. We'll see how it goes...
