It is a shot in the dark. Weather can be all over the board. It is generally mild year-round, but it can also be extremely hot and extremely cold. You are likely to find nice weather with either choice. I don't like it hot. The way I look at it, it isn't bad if you dress for the weather. If it is coldThanks! I will be in the country. It sounds like it would prefer the July option. I’m not decided yet though. Thank you so much!
I'm in the north 'burbs of St. Louis, born in St. Louis, lived in the city and suburbs most of my 70+ years except for a smattering of years overseas and in Kansas City, MO. To predict a year in advance is anyone's guess. Cold came late this year. I had the first hard freeze last night. Usually, we get a freeze well before Thanksgiving.
There is a heat island over the city and extreme storms tend to track just north or just south whenever there is an atmospheric river in play.
Most people tend to remember the worst weather experiences.
Granted, I recall extreme weather on both extremes, but it is generally quite mild and can be any month of the year.
Several years ago, we had a brutal winter with a low of -19F one night at my house and snow stayed on the ground for months. That isn't common. In fact, St. Louis isn't known for snowfall. White Christmas's are very rare.
It was either that summer or the one preceding it that was brutally hot. Weeks with highs above 100 and a few days in the 110 plus range. Again, that is uncommon.
Historically, July and August can be brutal with high heat and humidity. Unlike other hot places I've been, it doesn't really cool down at night. Other placed I've been that hit 100+ have fairly mild nights. If it is over 100 here, it may not drop out of the 80s at night. For the last few years, in my experience, the heat of summer has come early - late May and excruciating in June yet easing off in July and almost pleasant in August. I even did without AC most of August this year and last.
While the cold can come anytime from October to April, it can be mild for a month or more in winter. I remember canoeing in February once when it hit 70 degrees, sunny and breezy. Absolutely beautiful day.
Maybe it depends on whether you prefer hot or cold weather. Or more accurately, do you envision escaping a locale that is oppressively hot and humid or escaping biting frigid winds?
If moving a household, most people avoid cold wet or snowy weather but by the same token, 100F and 95% humidity are just as miserable.
Another thing to consider, given that spring and fall are pretty pleasant. The difference is the emerging spring growth, and all the spring flowers as opposed to autumn colors. Both are great but if we have a very dry summer, fall colors aren't as vibrant. But the colors of spring are reliable. Going from the drab winter into the explosion of growth really does something for me. There is as much variety of greens as the colors of fall. From the palest greens of emerging growth to the darker hues of coniferous trees. Then you have the flush of redbuds, dogwoods and other spring bloomers are striking throughout the woodlands.
