Calling Miss Jayne *Graphic Photo* Crested Duck Genetics Awesome Info!

From page 6 of thread:

"Here are two blips on crested genes:

The domestic Crested Duck is a duck breed descended from the Mallard. It has its appearance because it is heterozygous for a genetic mutation causing a deformity of the skull. As a result, when a pair of crested ducks breed, the young sort out in the usual 1-2-1 ratio:-

25% are homozygous for the normal allele of this gene and so have no crest and if bred together their offspring will never have a crest.
50% are heterozygous for this gene and hatch with a crest of varying sizes.
25% are homozygous for the crested allele of this gene and die from exposed brain without hatching, as it is lethal in homozygous form.
If a crested duck and a non-crested duck breed together, the resulting ducklings would be expected to be 50% crested and 50% non-crested.

That is from Wikipedia...

And:

The domesticated Crested Duck breed is a type of domestic duck breed of rather large size and weight with beautiful plumage.

The Crested duck breed is distantly related to other ducks and is directly descended from the Mallard duck breed.

Crested Ducks have naturally-deformed skulls that give it a physical "crest" on the top of its head. Crests should be large and sit symmetrically on the duck's head.

The crest on Crested Ducks arose from a genetic mutation specifically bred into the bird by duck breeders.

****Interestingly enough, a quarter of all Crested Ducks die when they hatch because the crest is not properly formed and leaves the duckling's brain fatally exposed.****
Another quarter of all Crested ducklings are born without a crest.

Only half of all Crested ducklings hatched from eggs procured by breeding two Crested ducks will have the crested genes passed down to them.

Surely these were not Crested Call Ducks?! What were they?

good point here! yes! they had a grandpa that was crested!

not that i am glad that this happened, but now i have learned something new in case of it happening in my future hatches.

oh Mark, how sad. you let me know if you want more eggs Hon! i have eleventy billion of them!

Mark Amazing Photo.
Sorry it was born with the fatal gene.
I know sometims rabbits are born that way,(brain exposed, or internal organs outside the body) its very sad to see and even harder to figure ot why it happens. In rabbits though its generally a product of too close line breeding that brings the fatal issue out and not a genetic issue.
Thank You Jenna for the Genetic infrmation, it truely helps the novice with this problem undestand what they are up against.

I never knew Call Ducks even had a crested gene? I knew there was a Crested duck but thought they were a much larger duck than a Call.
Interesting to say the least.

Mark I am sorry this happened to you . I know it wasnt expected on anyones part, genetics can create some of the nastiest surprises for breeders and hatchers alike.

for you

Good for you. I hope you will be there when he does it, as you must learn to do this when necessary, if you are going to continue to keep birds.

No one likes to do this....

so it's just a faulty gene, where if only 1/4 of the alleles are correctly matched within the chromosome. You will get a healthy crested duck.

lol OK in Back Yard Langauge.

The crested duck aren't naturally crested. The crest happens when a gene is mutated and the genetic info is wrong so it makes the skull a different shape.the crest appears when you have one healthy gene and one crested (mutated gene)

there is a 1 in 4 chance of this happening (due to two faulty genes being inherited).

if there is a healthy gene and a non-healthy (mutated where the genetic info in wrong). The healthy gene is dominant.

but if you get two mutated genes you end up with the crest not fully forming. so he's screwed from the moment of conception.

Wow! i am learning alot from this thread! i never knew these things about ducks

if your girls are still laying after i get out this health glitch hopefully by next week i may be getting more from you Miss Jayne i loved the color that duckling was

Keep this info coming i am writing all this stuff down i =n my incubation journal
