Calling the Duck Doctor

@TominWa I think it is great that you are posting updates. I know often, I run across an interesting thread and never see the final outcome.
One thing I have learned here. As everyone got me through the first year of chickens....its mostly all the same things. Some variations. It is a much bigger learning experience than anyone realizes. I am thunderstruck at the individual personalities and how attached you get to these things. And how attached they are to you. Backyard, small things like most of us do are totally different than a farm, yet a lot of the problems are magnified. Space, borders, health and more. A farmer probable doesn't get as attached as most of us, its different in a way. In my opinion, a feed store should make people take a two hour class or something before selling chicks to new people. As far as ducks, I was smart this time and went to my state thread here and learned and bought from local breeder. I was prepared! Yet, even when we prepare, threads like this pop up. Thankfully, if you need help, there are a bunch of experts that jump in.

Someday....I will be one of those. But for now.....I just try and learn and be a good backyard keeper. I hope this situation helps someone else in the future.

I use Apple Cider Vinegar in my birds drinking buckets a couple times a week it's a good tonic and also can help with bacteria. I have not had foamy eye in my Muscovies in a long time.

Hope your guy gets this cleared up. Might be something in the pond causing irritation too, How big is your pond and is there a lot of algae? Is it spring fed?

Pond is 60x100 and a backwater from a stream. Not deep and fluctuates in depth with seasons. Year round. Wild. Yes, there is alge along the bank. Heavy vegetation along edges, open water in center.

I have several fresh water containers that my seven chickens share with them. Can you give me a rough formula as to how much apple cider vinegar to add? I am thinking of adding a large fresh water container down near the pond where they enter and exit as well.

Taking advise, I locked them up about 4 last evening when they came looking for treats. He immediately started ducking his head in the fresh water. The White stuff went away immediately. A little bit later came right back, then went away a little bit later. It is still dark so waiting till light. But I suspect this is fresh water related somehow and his sheer joy at having a pond. He became overwhelmed with it. He never knew life could be this good so am trying to make it work. And just affecting the male.

Thank you for your attention.

Since everyone has been so nice I thought you would like to meet Daryl....the wonder duck! One year old. The sweetest most kind and fun loving barnyard animal I have ever seen. His heart is on his sleeve and he just loves his girls Carol and Beth. He doesn't just greet you he is genuinely glad to see you. For anyone thinking about ducks. The Muscovy were recommended to me by duck people on my state thread. I can't say enough good things about them. I have three little neighbor children 3-8. They are fixated on them and are down at the pond every day to give me an update on their activities. The ducks have other friends now. Make that a relationship. The little girl was telling me that "if your lady duck has 11 eggs she is hatching, you could keep ten and give me one". I'm going to have to keep one now and make it her duck. It can live with Daryl but it will be her duck. The pond is 100 feet from the bottom of the little hill in the back. Yes, he enjoys having his picture taken.

Put 1 Tablespoon of ACV into 1 gal of water my birds love it. If you can try and get the ACV with Mother it's better for them and us, yes I use it too to drink though not to dunk my head into :D

Sounds like your pond shouldn't be causing problems you ought to see what my scovy's and other ducks are enjoying right now mud and more mud they are pretty tough birds really I think this foamy eye will eventually go away with your drake. Is he acting healthy in all other ways. Aren't they just the coolest ducks?
