Calm, Kid Friendly Breeds

Can't go wrong with Buff Orps or Barred Rocks, although I have a blue Ameraucana girl who always wants to be held and petted.

I love my Buff Orps. Of course, the more time you spend with them the more tame they are. Just get some bread and sit in their coop and you will have a lap full of happy chickens that will eventually let you pet them and hold them.

We raise the standard sized partridge cochins and they are EXCELLENT, sweet tempered birds. They mature much slower than other large breeds and are very gentle. They are born broody but mine are steady layers, even when its cold. You can't go wrong with the cochins. I have a pic posted of ours in another thread. I can't get enough of the cochins and Wyandottes. Buff cochins are a favorite of mine. I love how fat they are... and they are so cute with their petti coat!

Ameraucana. I had one who laid her eggs up in the rafters. They all fell down(about 15) a week or so before her mysterious disappearance(she was always getting out). She was also the easiet to catch of my flock, and didn't panic when you set her down.
