Thanks for posting Ravencreek, is your llama a male or female? looks like he has goats as companions, do you use him as a guardian?

I thought we would have more pics on here (besides mine), there has to be more camelid owners on BYC.

Thank you so much for all your pictures. I love the ones of the female giving birth. That farmers market was really nice and it looked like there was a black cob of corn. Also thank you for posting the pic that shows the genus and species. There's a llama farm about a half hour away from here. We had to drive by it this weekend and the whole herd was out. I didn't realize how lanky llama's really are since I always seem to see them with a good coat of wool. Very interesting informative thread here with great pictures too.

Spectrumranch- Our llama was an accident. I was told he is a gelding. He was used as a sheep guardian but he escaped from their pasture and took the last owners and our volunteer fire and rescue on a 4 hour, 8 mile chase. They saw my pasture gate open and ran him into it. Then they closed the gate, walked up to my door and asked me if I wanted a llama. I told them no at first but when the guy told me he was going to "take care of him then" with a shotgun in his hand I told him to just leave him in there. He is WILD and can't be touched. Took 6 men to corner him and lead him to the pasture he is in now. But I understand why he didn't like to be bothered. He had on a foal sized halter that had grown into his head for the most part, across both cheeks, across his nose, and into the underside of his chin. You can still see the scars from me cutting it out of his face. I called a vet but noone would come out to mess with removing it cause he wasn't calm at all. So I had to do it myself. It was horrible but I just couldn't let him suffer with it on. That was 4yrs ago and he still refuses to be my friend. He will just sniff my hand but if I even blink he is gone.

Glad to hear you gave him a home. We always tell new llama owners NOT to leave halters on, I have seen other cases like that. Plus when they chew a camelid rotates it mouth back and fourth so with a halter on it does not chew right.

Is there a way to gentle him or gain his trust? I'd like to be able to sheer the hair off of him. He has clumps hanging from him as you can see from the pic. I will go out and get better pics of him tomorrow with an actual camera instead of a cell.
