Hello all, I have posted here with much success and hoping for one more time! My girl China ( 3yo Barred Rock) has recurrent ascitis. I have had her belly drained a few times (3?) in the last year. She does really well taking furosemide, but if she gets stressed it gets the best of her. I think this horrid heat wave stressed her out. She really needs her belly drained. She is suffering. I have always gotten her rite into the vet. This time the vet can’t see her until Friday. She has gotten worse every day and I am just sick about all this waiting and waiting until Friday! I honestly don’t know if she’ll make it that long and the toll it will have taken on her by then 😢. Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!! Wyorp Rock, are you out there maybe? Thank you all, from a seriously stressed out mom!

Can you get needles and syringes from your feed store? Clean the skin on the lower abdomen with betadine or chlorhexidene (Hibiclens) and insert an 18 gauge needle just into the abdomen? I withdraw some fluid, and disconnect the needle and let the fluid drain. When I recently drained my bantam hen, the fluid continued to drain after I removed the needle, which is fine. I sat her on a towel, and had someone hold her during the needle insertion. If the fluid is thick or cloudy, it may clot off the needle. Here is a video of someone draining a hen:

Thank You! Are there any veins that I may hit when doing this? Do I use the beta fine to clean the are after as well?

I would lay the chicken on it’s side to attempt to drain. Once the needle is in, then you can let her stand. You shouldn’t hit a vein if you just go through the skin in the full part of the belly. With any injection, if you pull back on the syringe, you pull the needle out and try another spot. But don’t attempt if you don’t feel feel comfortable. The pictures in post 42 below show a needle in place:

Eggcessive, thank you for taking the time today to help me and my girl. I did it, I drained 2 60cc syringes, phew- so nerve wracking. There is quite a bit more. I will repeat either tomorrow morning or later tonight. I hope this gave her some relief as she was not looking so good. Thank you again for your guidance it is very much appreciated 👍😊
