My 23 yo buff just started laying less then 2 weeks ago. She was doing fine and within the last couple days I noticed that after she lays she can’t walk for about 15 minutes. I pulled her out of the nesting box and put her by the water and she drinks laying down. Is this normal and will pass?

There’s a lot of nerves back there. Was it a large egg?

T

hats a pretty good size egg! But I think she’s getting a lot of pressure on the nerves while laying. Strange though
It is?? I weighed up compared to the ones from the grocery store so I thought it was small. Maybe the egg is to big for her? Does this put her at risk for egg binding?

Laying eggs is amazing feat.. why are you bugging her.. maybe that's an issue for lot's of hens.. but we don't know it cause we ain't bootin' t hem outta the box.

There are indeed a lot of nerves back there including the sciatic.. when pressed on results in lameness..

But overall the birds do their own thing.. especially new layers may be in the box several hours figuring it out.. Maybe she was in her zen zone during the lay pressure and hadn't snapped out of it yet.. Sorta dazed. Or her leg had just gone numb with pins and needles from sitting too long int he wrong position.. But usually they STAND up to drop there egg in the box.

Over all I would just suggest leaving her be and then SEE what happens instead of rushing the process. ;)

she is very needy. It’s so strange. She had tried several times to make my lap her nesting box. She follows me around the yard when she had to lay. She is the only one that does it.

I took her out because she didn’t look right. I was concerned that something was wrong with her. I’m a new chicken mom do everything is alarming right now. Especially if it’s not what everyone else is doing.

She is the only one that makes a straining sound. I’m so worried about her.:(
