Can a chick live with a broken neck??? UPDATED!!

Thank you for telling me about Tux! That gives me more hope that my little guy will be OK. I was thinking of doing the splint thing, but just not sure how to do it. I would hate to do it in the wrong position & hurt him even more.

Well, I made a splint for his neck & while I was gone to the store to buy some Vitamin E, he was able to get the splint off. So, maybe that shows that he does have some strength & he can move his legs & head some. I am still very worried about him. He did eat some more cat food with the Vitamin E & he drank some water, so that is good. I just hope I am doing the right thing & am not making him suffer & prolonging the inevitable.

If he is able to move his mouth, his eyes and his legs as well as poop, I would think that perhaps it is a pull or sprain or pinched nerve. I would prop his head up on a towel, keep shallow food and water close w/ vitamins and give it time....

If he is really small, try taping two bandaids to each other sticky to sticky and brace his neck so none of the sticky gets on him, and lightly tape the bandaids as a soft splint. Just a suggestion, if he isnt better by later today, the ice cold water method is far easier to do than the snipping off of his head, just my opinion. Please dont anyone yell at me. best wishes to you. Just lost my rooster to a coyote. So my heart is hurting anyways. Good Luck

Hi chickenzoo! He (well, I am starting to think he is is she) can move his mouth, eyes, legs & is still pooping. But, she seems to have no control over her movements. She cannot walk or even stand. If I put her up on her feet, she kind of scoots backwards & then just flops over & that's it. I have been feeding her with a spoon & I have to hold her & put her beak to the spoon. She won't peck at the food, she just puts her beak in the food & kind of sucks it up. I am giving her a Vitamin E & a tiny dose of Metacap daily & continuing with the wet cat food mixed with chick starter & giving her sugar water. And keeping her as comfortable as possible with her head propped up. I feel that's all I can do. If anybody has any other advice, I would really appreciate it!

Thank you! I will try the bandaid splint! I tried a toilet paper tube one, but she got it off somehow.
I am so sorry to hear about your rooster!

I’m not so sure I would do anything. We had a six month old rooster who’s head was draggong on the ground turn out perfectly fine. We shut him up for a few days and slowly his head came back up. He was never the same though, he never flew or perched and always had a tilt to the left, but he was happy. In fact being stuck on the ground actually turned him into a cuddle rooster!

Well, the little chick passed away yesterday. She seemed to be doing better Sunday night. She was all of a sudden alert with her eyes open & chirping like crazy all night. She ate & drank a bunch & was holding her head up a little better. So, I started feeling like there was some hope she would get better. I was even trying to think of a name for her. Then, when I got up Monday morning she was barely breathing & not moving at all & she passed away a little later. I hate that she died, but I am glad she is not suffering.
Thank you everyone for your help & encouragment!
