Can a forum get too large?

I sometimes wonder if forums get too large? I don't like the ones that only have 5 or 10 posts a day, but sometimes it is hard to keep up with hundreds of posts each day. I am just pondering this.

THIS one has gotten large enough that your original post gets lost in the recent posts in a matter of minutes!! Have you noticed? I don't think that this is a bad thing, but it might be nice if we could individually configure what pops up first.

Depending on the time of day, I think it's more like a matter of seconds! I've gotten to 'know' who are the experts on certain areas, and my pm box is my friend

Otherwise it would be very confusing!

yeah this one is very busy but thats a good think always something new... i do check the unanswered posts at the bottom of the page often too

Busy is good. Our goal is to help as many people as possible to help and care for their chickens. In general, the more people, the more activity on the site and this usually translates into more answers to peep's questions!

There definitely are some consequences to the tremendous activity found on BYC, but we've got a lot of features and tools on the forum that help to keep things clear and organized.

While I can't say I know every one of the 41,000+ members, there are many that I know very well.

If the whole forum is too busy, stick to a few specific sections. If it is still too busy, maybe one of our other smaller sister sites is more your pace?

aww thanks... i said i check them but i often dont know the answers to them sadly

And I know this has been said 1,000 times, but the search feature is your friend. Depending on your question, the answer may already be out there waiting for you because it has already been asked and answered by others.

Everything else on BYC moves quickly and I like it. I have been a part of other forums where there would be no new posts for hours and hours... Snore.

As someone who is still a newbie of sorts I have found that the time of day can have a lot to do with it. Also, if your post goes to the 2nd page then you may not get an answer for a while. I have had only one post go unanswered (can't remember which one) but most of the time people do get back. I have also seen someone bump a post I know you are not suppose to) to help get it answered if they didn't know and it is an emergency, like rally sick chicken. I love this site and stay on all day and check as much I in between tasks at work. Shhhhhh don't tell my boss
