Hi. My babies are about 4 months old now and I have found out that one of "my girls" is a rooster. I am thinking about keeping him anyway because I am attached already but I am wondering if it will harm my rooster to have the same food I will be feeding my hens?

Some birds are genetically predisposed to an inability to process excess uric acid, which is why some roosters develop issues from eating layer feed and some can do it all their lives and never have a problem. If you are concerned you can feed the whole flock an "all flock" type of feed and offer the hens crushed oyster shells or egg shells on the side for calcium.

Welcome to BYC! Over the years I've had many roosters eat the same layer feed as the hens and they never had a problem doing it. Still, if you are concerned about it, sumi has suggested a good alternative. Good luck with your flock.

I agree with Sumi. You can purchase a Flock Raiser feed. Purina makes a Flock Raiser. It is a feed you can feed to chicks, pullets, hens and roosters. It does not have high amounts of calcium. Then you can offer oyster shell on the side and the hens will eat that as needed. Roosters will do ok for a few years on layer feed, but as they age, all this calcium can cause lots of issues.

Enjoy this new journey you are on and welcome to our flock!

X 2 -- I prefer not to take the risk, so flock raiser/all flock for all and calcium on the side.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

X4 flock raiser is a safe bet.
