Can a rooster's spurs be permanently removed, so that they wont grow back ?

Yes, there is a quick inside the spur, just like a cat's claw.

I used a strong flashlight, to give me an idea of where my rooster's quick was. And it measured out at 1.5 inches from his leg. So, I'll mark his spur with a permanent marker, and cut his spur with a Dremel, then, I buff the edges with a sanding attachment, so they are nice a smooth.

If you hit the quick, it will bleed. So, have some "Blood Stop", or cornstarch, on hand to put on the bleeding. It will stop quickly.

Or, I guess you could just file/sand down the points, too...

You need a helper for this. :)

God Bless!

Here is my very recent experience - I had someone hold my roo and did the twist and pull off of the spurs. My rooster has never been into me, at all, no matter what I try. The only time I can hold him is to go pick him up while he's roosting at night, but nothing helps. The afternoon I removed the outer shell of his spurs, he wanted to have a go at me, but he stopped. The next morning he was cranky as all get out with the hens. He pecked at them, hard, while they were trying to eat. He has been an absolute ass to me since doing this. The next time I work on his spurs, I will try to dremel them down instead, and see if that helps his disposition. I am reaching the end of my rope with him.

I have a 2 year old white cochin rooster that the spur on his right leg curves downward into his the top of his back toe. There is a calloused indent on the top of his toe from the spur. I have it trimmed as far down as I can get it. I even made him bleed a'lil. I'm afraid he'll eventually lose his toe if I can't get it short enough.

Does any one know, if I remove the outer casing of his spur can I redirect the way his spur grows before it gets hard again?
