It's been awhile but you have to cross multiple X = 50
_ _
100 100

Multiply the 50 and 100 then divide by the 100 below the 50.

Think this...

100% of something is the whole.
(in this case, the number 70)

Divide that number (70) by 10's...it is 7.

20% of 70 is then 14. (2x7=14)

Change the percents to a decimal. 20% = .20 (Start at the right and move the point over twice. Example: 259% = 2.59)

Multiply the decimal by the number you want to find out the percent. For the first example, it would be .20 x 70 = 14

The answer to the first question is 14

I hope this helps!

There is a better way that will help you understand the "language" of math.

20% of 70

Translation: 20/100 X 70

"of" means "multiply"

"%" means literally "per 100", which is a ratio. Ratio means divide. 20 per 100 means 20/100.

When you are multiplying a fraction by a whole number, make the whole number into a fraction.

20/100 X 70/1

Multiply the numerator of the first by the numerator of the second. Put this number as the new numerator after the equal sign.

Multiply the denominator of the first by the denominator of the second. Put this number as the new denominator after the equal sign.

20/100 X 70/1 = 1400/100 = 14

Use this process to find any percentage of any number. Some of the previous answers are little "tricks" that help you find an easy percentage of a number (multiples of 10), but won't be much help when you need to find out 13.7% of 82. What I showed you will work every time.

:)

20% of 70...

20% of 70 is _______

of means multiply and is means equals
any percentage can be written as a decimal because percentage means x/100
...so the problem is:

20 % X 70 = __________ or .2 x 70 = __________

I suggest you re-read the links Stacykins showed, and ask your teacher. The explanation in the links is very clear, although I do the problems a little differently.

Spook's explanation is the easiest for me in everyday math. 10% of any number means moving the decimal point one numeral to the left....10% of 120 is 12, 10% of 575 is 57.5, etc. If you then need a whole number you just use the same 10% and work from there, for example : 15 % tip on a bill of $67 is... 6.7 + 3.33 or $10.

haha...we think alike...but I thought it faster...by just a few minutes.
