I can't speak for the hatcheries, many of which seem to be doing well, some of which have gone out of business.
However, the vast majority of breeders that I have contact with-and there are many, consider a year when they break even a fantastic year. Speaking for myself I have broken even occasionally, made a [small] profit once or twice and usually run in the red. For most breeders it's ahobby that pays you back part of your outlay.
I usually sell 10 or so trios a year for $75 each. To get those trios + the 20 or so birds I keep for show and breeding purposes I raise 200+ birds. The culls go to a local auction and bring 50 cents to $2.
There's an old saying among long-time poultry breeders. "There's a lot of money in poultry, I put it there."
If you want to raise poulty and sell a few because you enjoy it for whatever reasaon, fine. If you think you'll make money at it you'll probably be disappointed.
