Can anyone help as to whether I should assist in hatching?

Sometimes, the chick is stuck to the side f the egg and cant move into position, even without a develpmental defect. Lets just wait and see and hope for the best. No matter what happens, you still have the first chick! Sending calming vibes!

Yes definite movement.
I've made sure there was a small slit in membrane being careful to not break any veins that I can see. Sadly no movement this time but I've put it back into the incubator, should it be in a cup of some sort or is it ok as it is. The chick looks like it must be very small, which I knew because I weighed my eggs through-out. I knew this one was 1.4g lighter than it should be. Can't see any feathers just red membrane and veins :(

I think leave it in the incubator as is, as long as no other chicks are in there that could peck.
The cup might make it harder for it to get out, if it does.

Yes and having that first hatch has made it less painful. I don't hold out much hope for this little one but you never know. Perhaps should have intervened earlier but that is what experience is all about. x

So I presume it hadn't internally pipped after all, meaning the air hole I put in was not useful for this chick. In effect, me just now breaking the membrane was me doing that for it.

I have seen small microscopic movement within the membrane on close scrutiny through the clear Brinsea Mini Eco Incubator lid, so you never know. I guess if it can breathe, finish absorbing yoke and vessels, then it stands a chance of breaking out of the shell and life. Sadly, it may have been struggling for too long. We will have to wait and see. Thank you so much for every ones help x

Don't give up yet. This situation isn't ideal, but there's still a chance here. The chicks often rest while they absorb the yolk - so let it be. I know it's anxiety inducing, but hang in there.

Open a small hole in the membrane it looks shrink wrapped.. if you can't see a beak it may be mal positioned. If there is any blood stop look like it may ned a little time but I would open a hole in the membrane to help with air to the chick.. keep it moist with the oil, you did good with the wet towel away from the egg, if wrapped in it the chick could get cold...

Slowly open a spot in the membrane where no veins are visible, you can kinda smooth it away with a finger gently. If any sign of blood stop
Yes I have pierced membrane but not pulled it back or anything, should I try and find a beak? Nothing is obvious at all through the membrane, I can just make out membrane and blood vessels only. It looks like I might break veins if I try to look for a beak but should I try? Worried about keeping on taking it out of the incubator too. It doesn't look anywhere near ready.
