Can anyone help as to whether I should assist in hatching?

Since its been that long I would assist. Read this article first if you haven't already. https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/guide-to-assisted-hatching-for-all-poultry.72886/

I use tweezers to remove the shell. I only remove enough to allow the chick to push out of the shell when ready.. If you notice the chick moving its mouth like its eating leave it alone. It normally means it hasn't fully absorbed the yolk yet. If you see any veins stop and wait.

Open a small hole in the membrane it looks shrink wrapped.. if you can't see a beak it may be mal positioned. If there is any blood stop look like it may ned a little time but I would open a hole in the membrane to help with air to the chick.. keep it moist with the oil, you did good with the wet towel away from the egg, if wrapped in it the chick could get cold...

Slowly open a spot in the membrane where no veins are visible, you can kinda smooth it away with a finger gently. If any sign of blood stop

That chick is not ready to come out yet - check the membrane again in a few hours to see if the veins have receded. If so, you can start a slow peel back of inner membrane. They can stay quite a while like this and you will now be able to monitor movement. Don't assist more when the veins are so pronounced.

My last hatch were all late too (I obviously need to re-calibrate my inc) and I had to assist a few like this.

What do you think has happened? Be really useful to know to further my experience. So sad if there is no hope but if I can learn from it then that can only be a good thing. :/

I agree with tiny hole and waiting for veins to recede...patience! It could stil take several hrs in the incubator...Mine with a dark vein took 12 more nail biting hrs....not sure if that could be realistic on this case.
