Can anyone help me here?

As far as anti virus goes I use kaspersky and love it. Norton I hear takes up a lot of resources from your computer. My mom use to use it and got a nasty virus, she doesn't have a computer right now.

You can get a virus with any anti virus protection. I had gotten several with McAfee, but I always had problems with updating which is why I am really liking Norton. The scans aren't troubling and I haven't had any update issues. I have only been using Norton for 2 months, but it is installed on a refurbished computer and is running very smoothly. If virus avoidance is top priority, get an Apple, but they are very expensive. I've never heard of Kaspersky. My dad also loves Norton.

Out of all the choices so far, the Toshiba is the best. I have a Toshiba and it's been great for 4 1/2 years, but I take really good care of it.

You can use a free antivirus software called Avast!. It is downloadable right on the internet and has been wonderful. Of course, you shouldn't just go to any website and download willie nillie. You can still get viruses with any antivirus software if you are not smart about the things you use your computer for.

You just have to look at the games you are interested in playing and make sure you have a sound and graphics card that can support the games. The problem I have with my computer is the graphics card is old and won't support many of the newer games. Don't get anything with less than 2 GB of RAM. 4 GB is even better. Don't worry so much about hard drive space because you can always add an external hard drive down the road.

I wouldn't go with refurbished. You never know what you will be getting.

thanks for your help!

When you are downloading games, you will be amazed at how fast the hard drive fills up. Eventually you may want to get an external hard drive. I would also suggest a Malware software. These can be downloaded for free online. To me, Malware is just as dangerous to the computer as a virus is. Enjoy your new computer

I love my Toshiba a whole lot!

It's quite fast, had it for over a year and tons of space left (tho no games here).. it's survived who knows how many dumps on the floor due to my puppy and episodes of him playing ball on it... it was built well enough that there still isen't a flaw or a scratch after all the abuse. I like the screen... I like some of the extra programs on it like the Sticky Notes... it's Windows...
Plus it's got lots of shiny stuff on it... the keyboard is a really nice one... I like the way the mouse pad works so I don't have to add a mouse to it....

You should try to stop at Bestbuy or the electronic areas of stores and play around with a few of the different brands. Make sure the one you get is user friendly for YOU in particular and make sure of the real life sizes (I saw some super tiny ones when I was shopping that were very cute, but not practical).

Mine was a floor model, but had barely been out there before Toshiba moved on to "newer" laptops... so I got mine for a huge discount, in your price range... so you might look into that. The Best Buy dudes got it all cleared and cleaned up for me so I had the benefits of it being setup right... hehehehe.

I personally would not get a refurbished one. My father bought me my first computer for my birthday one year. It was a big brand, normally great, refurbished one and it lasted maybe 9 months, plus it seemed rather thrown together. When it died, my brother tried taking it to peices and it turns out some parts installed were not compatible with the rest of the system, like the wrong type of fan and stuff
