I have a stray rooster. He has lived with us for about a year now and showed up after living in the alley for a few months then coming to our back drive. We live in the middle of town. I am quite fond of him. He eats scratch, cat food, dog food, bugs, etc. He roosts in my horse trailer. (When I use my trailer for the horses and return home to park it, the rooster always runs up to my truck door as I'm getting out and makes a lot of noise.) He is very curious and 'shadows' me when I'm working outside or in the garage. He is about 19" at the top of his comb. He has a large, curved talon midway up each leg. He won't let me pick him up from the ground, but if he is roosting and I approach calmly he will perch on my arm and let me carry him around. I've only seen him aggressive once or twice and that was toward the neighbor's kittens who tried to play with him when he was eating. He stretched his wings to the ground, draged them around, cocked his head and made a sound almost like a growl. He roams the back driveway at liberty and has wandered down the street twice in the past month but both times returned to us. There are other chickens down the street. I wandered about getting a chicken for him but was told it might make him aggressive.

I have no idea how old he is or what breed. Anyone here know the breed or how I can tell how old? How long do roosters live? His color has changed over the past year from a white base to a pale golden tan base, and he originally had only one long tail feather but that one fell out and now he has multiple long arched tail feathers. I don't know if any of this info is needed or useful. Thanks for any info anyone can provide.

His name is Cogburn, lol.

He's beautiful! Sometimes you can estimate the age of a rooster by the size of their spurs, but that's tricky when you don't know how fast they grow.

He's a mixed breed, something barred and something gamey in the background. How you mentioned his color changeing leads me to think he was probably hatched last spring-ish, he was probably just maturing when you noticed him. With the barred background in a mixed breed, they often start out more white and the reddish/gold/tan color leaks through as they age. So, a year and a half now? I've had roosters live to 7-8 and even then they didn't die, I got rid of them. Sounds like he's smart enought to avoid any predators.

If you get a hen (or hopefully more than one, one hen would easily get overmated by a rooster) he might take his role as her protector quite seriously, you just can't tell. If you're wanting chickens anyway, go for it. If you're not that interested and just like your unique pet, he is fine to just hang on his own.

He's a very handsome fella. If you like his temperament and just enjoy having him around, I wouldn't get a hen. You might find his attitude changes dramatically.
