Hello!

I am looking for a hypoallergenic puppy that would be good with chickens and cats. Considering the portugese water dog, soft coated wheaten terrier, and the lagotto romagnolo at this point in time since i don't know any better. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I have had dogs in the past: border collie, sheltie/akita, boxer, etc... but DH is allergic to dogs... so i am trying to find a compromise.

thanks!

I dont know if the portugese water dog is hypoallergenic, but it is a bird dog.. Might go after your chickens..

I know that poodles and Havanese are hypoallergenic. But the poodle is actually a bird dog to start with.. So they may go after birds too. The Havanese is a toy dog I believe.. Have no idea how they would be around birds..

Good luck on your search..

Oh, my friend has a Powder Puff Chinese Crested and she is absolutely the sweetest dog ever! I love that dog. My friend has a rabbit, a guinea pig, a parrot, numerous fish, cats, other dogs, and Eon (that's the dog) is absolutely wonderful with them all. I think that if my friend were able to own chickens where she lives, Eon would be great with them. They really are great dogs.

I agree a powder puff Chinese Crested I have one and she is great with my chicks & chickens and my nephew who has loads of allergies & asthma has no issues with her.

I wouldn't consider hairless dogs hypoallergenic either....since they have no coat to hold it in, their dander flies loose freely and they can actually be pretty allergenic.

My husband and I should be getting a spinone italiano (he's allergic)........although they are not technically hypoallergenic...and are bird dogs...lol You could look into wirehaired single coated breeds as they tend not to shed heavily and can be less allergenic than other breeds. Different people will react to different breeds differently, so before you choose anything try to get him around the breed a couple times to see how he reacts. I'd recommend at least two encounters as many won't react the first time around....but will the 2nd.

I was also thinking of Chinese Crested, I was thinking of the hairless, but I'd think PP would be good to!

No one here is allergic, but I have a hairless crested, she doesn't have a dander problem. Zoe manages to live w/ a large assortment of critters including chickens, cats, ferrets, a rabbit, goats, horses, cows, etc.

The only thing is I think people can be allergic to the saliva and in that case I don't think it matters if the dog is considered hypoallergenic.

Google hypoallergenic dogs and make a list of the different breeds. Then go to the AKC website and research each of them for what they were bred for and temperament. The AKC website is a great source of information. From what I understand the Obama's got the Portugese Waterdog because one of their girls is allergic. I suspect that will make the breed very sought after and expensive for a while.
