This little chick is 1 week old. He is holding up his foot and picking at it. We picked off a tiny piece of skin that was dangling and put neosporin on both feet so it might soften it up. He is the last one hatched and he hides under momma a lot. Also, his legs appear wet. Anything more we can do?
It almost looks like cradle cap but on his feet.

It could be foot pad dermatitis which may result if the bedding gets wet or soiled. Make sure the bedding is pine shavings, and is kept dry.

I have straw in there. Is straw OK if I keep it clean and dry or is it pretty important that we get pine shavings?

I would initially clean the foot ( feet) with a betadine solution, straw is ok as a bedding but needs to be changed frequently if it is getting wet, hay gives the same problem as it can become saturated....as Eggcessive says pine shavings are better as they will absorb a lot of moisture.

The foot looks sore...could be bacterial or fungal...betadine will help with a bacterial problem but if it is fungal ( due to damp conditions ) you may need to treat with a cream for athletes foot...

I think it is sore. I feel bad for it. I couldn't get beta dine but I got iodine. Do I need to dilute that and if so, how much?

Thank you for your help!

Iodine is good to help dry them out and help with infection. I would probably change to pine shavings. Straw can also be a source of mites. A good vitamin with minerals including biotin may be good for helping to prevent this, one such as Avian Super Pack 1/4 tsp per 5 gallons of water. So I put a slightly diluted solution of iodine on the bottom of its foot. I gently dabbed it dry and then I put a small amount of athletes foot cream on them. We totally redid their little coop in pine shavings and everyone seems OK. Thank to the folks who replied!
