This little Silkie did not make it in the incubator

.. went into lockdown on day 18 and humidity and temperature were all normal..

It did not hatch on day 21 with the others but I left it in until day 23 being hopeful that maybe it would just be a late hatch as I've had that before..

I noticed when I candled this egg in particular the day before going into lockdown that there was no more movement (this egg had previously been very active) .. this makes me think that it may have quit around day 17-18 .. I performed an "eggtopsy" to check out what may have gone wrong...

Judging by the amount of yoke absorbed, around what day do you think this chick passed?

***this egg also had a strange line in the outside of the shell as you can see in the first picture.. what could this be?!

Blondie34,
Did you notice if he was shrink wrapped during the eggtopsy? Normally if I can see that well on candling the definition of the chick/whitespace that is what I assume. It may be an odd shadow on the egg though, or my monitor being weird. With you others hatching right on time, and with that much yolk absorbed shrinkwrapped and day 20ish would be my guess. I am so sorry for your loss. I hope the others are doing great!

Thank you! There were only two other eggs in with this little guy (I only collected a few eggs from my silkie coop) but both other chicks are doing fine so far, a little lethargic for my liking but time will tell!-- I've noticed it's the same hen laying eggs with the strange line around them, when I opened the egg I noticed the shell was rather hard/thick as well.. the inner membrane wasn't shrink wrapped to my surprise as I've had issues with that in the past..

I wonder if my humidity was too high as I bumped it to 75% when I used to only do around 60% in previous Silkie hatches.. the other two were wet for what seemed like forever when in previous hatches my little guys would fluff up pretty quickly/easily .. I'm wondering if I should take the humidity down a notch for my next hatch.. is it a possibility that the chick "drowned"?

I'm kicking myself wondering if the chick may have pulled through if I would've left it for another day ..

Poor little guy :-( It looks like it passed around day 18-19.

The line on the egg shell looks like a mend or a wrinkle. A broken and mended egg's shell got cracked/broken during the calcification process (caused by a disturbance during the calcification process) and got mended before the hen laid it. Wrinkled eggs are mostly caused by stress.

Very interesting, thank you..

The hen that lays these eggs with the "wrinkles" is the Silkie roo's "favorite" girl and gets mated with probably 2x as much as his other hens.. could the elevated frequency of mating cause stress/wrinkles in the eggs and do these wrinkles have anything to do with lower hatch rates?

It's possible that the roosters attentions are stressing her. Maybe separating them for awhile will help. Egg shell quality does have an influence on the egg's hatchibility, yes.
