Can baby chicks be kept in a cage?

I use an old baby play pen with newspaper on top of the pad and then wood shavings on that and paper towels on that for the first few days. I clipped the heat lamp right on the side of the play pen. It worked great.

I've been told the large boxes that melons come in are excellent brooders at no cost.
The Watermelon boxes are three feet tall and could be chopped down to whatever size you need- in addition to being already mounted on a pallet type base.
I asked at my local market for one of these boxes, but the clerk I buttonholed was not the right person to make that kind of decision, and since I hadn't ordered chicks did not pursue- but when I checked it out in the store it looked perfect for my need. The only problem now might be timing- how many melons are shipped this time of year.
