Can baby chicks fit through chicken wire?

I have 2 new baby chicks out in the coup with the other chickens. Is it possible for the babies to fit through the chicken wire and escape/be eaten?

The only reason I ask this is because last year down at our lake place we had purchased a mother and babies. We went home to the city on Sunday, returned after work on Thursday and 2 of our 7 chicks had just vanished. I had always assumed they had squeezed through the chicken wire and had been eaten by a predator. Does that seem likely? If the other chickens would have eaten them I assume there would have been evidence.

Should I get something to put around the bottom of my cage to keep the chicks from squeezing out?

Chicken wire comes in a bunch of different sizes. For example 2" would be plenty for chicks to run out of, depending on age. If they are getting out make sure the wire is not to big, its buried in the ground, and there are no other escape paths.

My baby ducks would fit through my wire and it's chicken wire. The little octagon shaped wire. I had to put hardware cloth around that pen to keep them inside it with Momma.
