This
link is good for Barred Rocks, Cuckoo Marans and Dominiques and has very good photos. Some breeder stock is harder to sex, but hatchery stock or a few generations removed from the hatchery is very easy 95% of the time. I'm rarely wrong about those, but there is occasionally one that will try to skirt around the rules and fool even the experts.

Now these chicks are from a friends barred rocks-I think she got them from a hatchery. I wanted to hatch out some chicks as some of my customers want just regular cheapo pullets and I don't carry your average run of the mill chickens to sell. They dont want to pay more than 2-4$ per chick and when I carry Lav Am's-BLRW's silkies etc.I cant offer much besides that-so I thought I would just start a flock of BR's just for them! Im not having good luck so far..still waiting on photos

thank you for that link speaks volumes!!!

could it be that because they are not the best quality in breed that looks can be decieving???

as harsh as this sounds I wouldnt hang onto 5 roos in hopes one would be a pullet-Id cull them:( I vowed last Summer I would not hold onto chicks that I knew were roos but was in denial. When I held out high hopes for half my new flock to be girls-28/35 were roos and I grew them out to 20 weeks+, Then processed most of them as I couldnt give them away!!!

These wee ones have thrown me cause they are so odd compared to those photos-their shanks are showing the darkness that would lead me to believe pullets though-really dark up to toe tips almost=but FAT legs and ankles!
for now they are safe-but the first sign of rooness-they have to go-of course I will try and give away before Id cull them so no worries there...

Seriously.... I would think being hatchery stock, they may not follow the same color patterns and leg colors etc. Best of luck
