Can budgie eggs be mailed and remain viable?

Looking to purchase some fertile budgie eggs but I've heard that the eggs are too fragile to do so. Why is this? Would they be able to survive with proper temperature control and padding? has anyone tried?

Most people won't send them through the mail since they're extremely thin and being tossed around in the mail system would likely do them in.

Chicken & duck eggs can withstand it as they're a bit thicker and tougher. If you have a friend willing to try sending the budgie eggs to you, you can, but they'll need to be heavily wrapped and padded for transit.

So do you think that eggs that are kept fixed in foam would survive ground shipping? Basically im trying to buy eggs for my job and dont know what to tell my boss, do I say it cannot be done or that we should spend the money and give it a try?

I would suggest to not do it cuz ground shipping is EXTREMELY unstable and its risky

Unless you are buying the eggs to feed to an egg-eating snake, no. There are better alternatives for crafting and there is NO chance that you will hatch one. And if, by a solid God-appearing-from-the-heavens-miracle you did manage to hatch one, then what? You have a naked, helpless chick that can fit on your thumbnail that needs feeding every 2 hours around the clock doe weeks and a special incubator to keep it warm and humid while still providing air flow.

What kind of job needs fertile budgie eggs? I've worked in animal care for DECADES and I need to know, because that's a new one.

Tell your boss that fertile/shipped parrot eggs are always a scam, and if you need fertile budgie eggs to buy a few pairs of budgies. Let them raise the chicks while you're at it. Even when I handfed birds for a living, you let budgie parents raise them for the first month.

Ok, @ghk I was so curious, I searched your post history. Tell me what the research project is and I'll tell you how to get what you need, because I really have been doing this a long time

Hey thanks! We're doing transgenic research that will contribute directly to the de-extinction and reintroduction of the beloved passenger pigeons. For this, we need a variety of species to compare to know if our research applies solely to our test species or if it can be applied elsewhere. We have our own aviary with budgies but they are sick and may take several months of recovery until they will be bred. That being said, their illness does not stop our research. We need budgie eggs asap, and since they cannot be mailed apparently, we need them close to home (Rockefeller University, NYC, NY). I can get on the train and pick them up myself in the hopes that me carrying them will prevent breaking. SO in summation, im looking for fertilized eggs, the younger the better, that are close enough for me to pick up (im willing to spend a few hours on the train). So if you know of anyone who can supply this in the area, please let me know!

@ghk , very cool! Thanks for all the info!!

Ok, so, budgie eggs will totally fail to develop if shaken even a little, so your best bet is still to have breeding pairs on site (obviously in a different room), next best is carrying eggs by hand as you mentioned. Spent a few minutes on NYC craigslist and found these ads, there are budgies for rehoming, both adults and babies. Now, you don't want babies, but anyone who has babies sometimes has eggs, so you can try that. A couple of ads are breeders, even if they're not advertising budgies, they know folks who have budgies and possibly eggs. you can also google "NY parrot breeder", I don't want to do links as that might be considered advertising. Last link is for a nearby Parrot Society, reach out to them as well.
