Can chickens eat safflower seeds?

I like this ideaMuddyHillFarm. I pulle dmy spent sunflower plants and gave the whole things to the chickens. They loved it! This year I will plant a bunch next to their run for excercise.

I am so glad to find this site and this thread. I happened to have a big ol bag of safflower that I got on Amazon - fairly good price. I was concerned so I looked it up here and voila! I got my answer.

Since I started my little chicken farm up again 2 weeks ago I have found all kinds if useful info here - thanks everybody.

I read that apple seeds are toxic so now I'm a little concerned about other things - like pear seeds. Does anyone have a list of poisonous items not to give chickens?

Is there an issue with giving wild bird seed to chickens? We mostly feed them high quality organic or transitional grains, food scraps and occasional shelled sunflower seeds for wild birds. Is the latter harmful because it is for Wild birds? I only ask because I'm curious if they are treated with chemicals that don't need to be listed as they aren't for human consumption. I would assume they aren't because Wild birds would suffer but anyone have more insight?

I feed birdseed to my chickens all the time. They love it. The millet is 11% protein and the black oil sun. seeds are 16%. You don't have to feed shelled BOSS- they have a gizzard which grinds it up (after they ingest grit). I am assuming you supplement grit or they can find sharp gravel in the soil (free range).

You can plant the birdseed too and grow millet and BOSS for your chickens.
