Can chickens eat tomatoes?

My chickens eat tomatoes....and I have not noticed egg reduction...my girls eat almost any fruit or veg we have left over....nothing for the compost after they have their way with my scraps! Lol.....sometimes I dig a whole and stuff my scraps in the dirt and they find the treats...as well as if they don't, a small bit of compost happens haha!

Thank you for the info. I had heard that chickens shouldn't eat tomatoes but I give them to mine frequently. So it's the plants that are poisonous, not the tomatoes.

my chickens literally wait at the garden gate for their tomatoes, squash and zucchini.
when they see me or my husband go in with a basket, they know the goodies are coming their way!

After reading most of this I threw several cherry tomatoes into the run with my Serama Rooster and his two hens.. it was quite the site .. Capone ( Rooster) would walk over to one and start to work on it .. the hens would immediately run over and push him out of the way. It did not seem mean, more of a little kid wanting whatever his older brother had .. he would move to another but as soon as he showed any attention to any of the tomatoes they would literally rush over to also eat the same one. I had thrown a few into the feeder as well, Capone took notice and decided to leave the hens to it and slyly shimmied on over to the feeder.. it did not fool the hens .. the minute he made his first pass at the tomato in the feeder they were on it like fly on scat .. poor fella is just going to have to learn a little teamwork if he wants a tomato I suppose lol

If you toss melon to them they will do the same thing.

As far as the acidity goes, I would assume the age old lesson about moderation applies.

I give my chickens tomatoes 2 -3 times a wk. They love it but moderation is the key and no green tomatoes.
