My free range birds do occasionaly deal with deep snow. When they have their preference, they avoid walking in it. They will often stand on pieces of wood to keep feet off cold snow since wood does not conduct heat as well. Birds below stand on wooden pallet to keep feet warm and dry. Snow 18" deep. Those that can will fly quite a bit to stay off snow. Some will fly 200 foot legs. Most chickens are not so capable but my American dominique hens will fly 30 feet; roosters of same only about 1/2 as far.

Video showing birds flying about 125 feet from roost on front porch to feeding station. Video long with action occuring near end.
Video of same birds flying from feeding station back to front porch at end of day'
Video of birds flying about 250 feet to reach a bare spot in snow.
When they have a choice, they tend to minimize time spent trekking through the white stuff.
