Can chicks go without a heat lamp..........

Oh let me explain every year we go to the farm to get rooster for Thanks giving cause we like to eat a lot of chickens and i tie it there for just a couple of min before we killed it.

But like this year i did't have a heat lamp and i only use a little heat that i bough at walmart and one die and two live so i don't know...

My plan is to have my chicks in a 4 by 4 cardboard box. My Dad says they dont need a heat lamp but i am certain they do. He thinks that they will be fine and survive it 62 degrees. Somebody help do i need one cause he is confusing me, is it required.
