Can chicks live outside (in brooder)?

I've noticed that as they age I have to clean the brooder more frequently to keep things smelling OK.

Kinda reminds me of when babies go from mothers milk and start eating regular food. Changing diapers takes a serious turn for the worse!

On a whim I've tried the 2 different pine shavings that my local Dell's carries. One is in just a big white package that says "white shavings" and the other is a brand name - Rosebud.

The "generic" white shavings were inferior. A strong pine odor, more dust, and seemed that the chicken poo got smelly quicker.
The Rosebud has a very mild scent, far less dust and seems to control the odor for a little longer.

This isn't an advertisement, and I wouldn't pay a bunch extra for the Rosebud, but at our local store the price difference is almost non-existent.

This was my first time raising chicks (we're almost 8 weeks old now and about 2 days from the coop being done!). Next time I'm hoping to just stick the babies under a broody mother and let nature take care of business :)
