can duck play in snow

Ducks vary in their response to snow. My Appleyards loved to play in the snow, but the Swedish prefer to stay out of it.

It doesn't matter what the weather is, the ducks need shelter. They need a place to get out of the sun, out of the rain, and out of the snow. They need a place where they can get out of the wind and mud. A large pen might not need a cover over the entire thing, but the ducks must have some place in their pen where they can get out of the weather.

We have snow in the winter and our ducks and geese seem to like to be out in the snow at times --- they are able to get back into their houses (and are locked in at night). Last year I had one duck get frost bite on her feet. We have been putting straw out for them to sit on instead of having to sit on snow - on the open areas of their yard, hopefully we will not have any more problem with feet this year.

My Khakis seemed to love the snow last winter. I think they spent more time playing and foraging during snow storms than under cover and seemed to like the vegetative cover more than their coop at times. However, Khakis are supposed to be a hardy breed and mine certainly proved to be last year.
